A president cannot control gas prices, but can influence them by pushing an agenda that contributes to increased prices. Environmental regulations, exports of US oil/ gasoline to other countries, lack of motivation to build new refineries all affect prices and are influenced by the administration in power.

To all of those who are always saying that gasoline has "doubled" since Obama took office, let's not forget that it was pretty high during some parts of the Bush Presidency.
I was just looking through my 2008 mileage records and found that gasoline 87 octane was $3.89/gal at the local Valero in San Antonio, Tex!!!

I recall vividly when Bush came into office in 2001, it was a time of rising gas prices. An angry Sen. Charles Schumer (D Nutcase) called for investigation into whether the price hike was due to a Bush admin plot. The calls for investigation were all over the nightly news, Sunday shows, etc.
Later on gas prices started to drop. At one point certain low-gas-tax states like GA actually had pump prices below $1.00. Schumer quietly dropped the calls for a Senate investigation.

Nice try, but you are forgetting several key facts.
1. Gas prices took a serious hit after Katrina hit in 2005. Guess what happened after that? They dropped back down to $2/gallon.
2. Yes, gas prices went up big-time in 2008 just prior to the economic meltdown. BUT... what happened after that? It was BUSH who decided to drill for more oil off our shores. "magically", our gas prices dropped DRAMATICALLY down to $1.50/gallon.
So, each time that gas prices jumped beyond reality, they came right back down. But, that hasn't happened under Obama. The BP oil spill was just what Obama needed to keep high gas prices across the country. Obama has NEVER tried to lower gas prices. He doesn't care about high gas prices at all.
The were high for a very long time. As a matter of fact the prices in 2008 were low for a very short time. Selective memory?
I call BS. Do you know that gas prices dropped below $2/gallon by the end of 2008? Obama didn't move into the white house until Jan 2009. You can't dish out the credit to Bush can you?
How about gas prices before and after Katrina? Gas prices went through the roof after Katrina. But, they were back to reality after just a few weeks. Look it up!
