"A new report by a liberal-leaning think tank recommends a dramatic overhaul of military pay, retirement and health care benefits as part of a $1 trillion cut in defense spending over 10 years.

The Center for American Progress calls for capping pay raises, eliminating military health benefits for many retirees who are covered by an employer-provided plan, and reducing the value of military retired pay as well as making retirees wait until age 60 to start receiving it."

This should be very popular.

Think tank recommends big benefits cuts

Too bad they didn't recommend ending wars that are destroying minds, lives and families.
Bringing the troops home and downsizing, is the best idea for now

Good idea, since the United States no longer fights conventional wars. The USA still is superior in land, air and sea battles.

That's already been done in Wisconsin, and some other states.

Yeah, Yeah; treat the military like it's the red-headed stepchild but keep increasing bureaucratic nonsense with more and more new levels of oversight and civil servant hiring.

I know why this would be popular to those suits sitting in boardrooms thinking they're the answer to immortal questions. Chop their benefits and respect and you cut the willingness to join voluntarily. Forces will summarily dwindle to size of easy compliance.

Problem with that idea is what happens to the state of readiness should you actually NEED them in the future for something other than stupid foreign policy run amock.

He's just fondly reminiscing about how they treated his fellow Hungarian soldiers while under the Soviet boot.

They also seem to forget our military is voluntary. If they cut their benefits, will people have the same incentive to join?

The military already has trouble recruiting anytime the economy doesn't suck with the current benefit system. They tried the 40% thing, except starting as soon as they got out, in '87 and had to get rid of it in either '99 or 2000 because they couldn't keep anyone in. That by the way, was after 5 years of targeted pay raises to keep people in and it wasn't working. Being in the military is not easy, you need a huge carrot to keep people or even get them through the door. Of course, there is always the draft.

You neglected to mention this.."In calling for less spending on military pay raises, the report basically endorses a plan proposed, but not yet executed, by the Defense Department. Under the Pentagon plan"

Almost everything in the thinks tank plan simply endorses the Defense Departments plan. These are not radical ideas to cut costs. These are the pentagon plans. This sounds like a Fox news report. Leave out the factual details that hurt your title.
