Colorado spending $208 million on empty solitary confinement prison

The Denver Post

CAÑON CITY —
Three days ago, Colorado shut down a brand-new prison it didn't need.

Yet it was built.

It was built even though most legislators opposed the prison in 2003, according to a key player. Another bit of legislative ingenuity overcame that problem. The sponsors lumped the prison with a new University of Colorado medical campus and gained bipartisan support for two projects financed without a vote of the people.

Separately, neither project would have passed, according to Republican Norma Anderson, the Senate majority leader and bill sponsor in 2003.

"You couldn't get the votes for either one of them," said Anderson, now a former legislator living in Lakewood.

Republicans wanted the prison, Democrats the hospitals, and "that's the only reason they were put together," she said. "It's very simple.

here's a dirty little secret that the article ignores, Colorado had a majority of republicans in the house, senate, and as the governor. if enough republicans wanted the prison and did not want the hospital then the prison would have been built.

Fact is they were both a waste of money if you ask me, with both parties throwing away money and blaming the other for the projects.

That doesn't sound like blackmail - it sounds like quid pro quo bipartisan looting of the Colorado taxpayers. They didn't want either facility.

Suggest you alter the title of the thread to reflect reality:

The Republicans blackmailed the Democrats for a $208 million white elephant prison in exchange for funding a badly needed hospital.

The Republican's prison is sitting empty, doing nothing for the residents of Colorado.

The Democrat's hospital is filled to capacity serving the healthcare needs of Coloradans, providing thousands of jobs and stimulating the economy.

The tax and spend and give nothing back Republicans looted the taxpayers. The Democrats just provided services for tax money collected. This just shows how low the Republicans will stoop. They will with hold funding for basic humans services like healthcare and education, to blackmail the Democrats for useless crap that tax payers don't even need or want.

The Med School and hospital complex was very much wanted. It's thriving and is an economic, job creating powerhouse.

Huh? The article doesn't address either the successful development of the medical campus or the level of support it had among Colorado residents.

I'm speaking as a long term resident of Colorado who lives just down the street from the Anschutz campus.

It says separately neither would have passed. In a representative government that means the constituents were not entirely on board...
