This is not a 'FREE stuff" problem. Truthfully, little has changed on entitlements over several decades, so if you were right on the power of "free stuff", that would fail to explain what had changed.

What changed is the nation, and the GOP responded by offering 1964 solutions to a 21st century audience.

Demographics are either the issue the GOP will address, or else, it will be even less competiitve in '16, '20, '24, ...

This thread is fascinating reading. The OP simply made the point that with the electorate in its current composition that the only way the GOP can win again is to drop its most extremist elements. Its not a thread about ideology. Its a thread about what a political party must do in the real world if it wants to win an election.

What were most of the replies? Most of the replies I've seen blindly defend the tea party and other extremist elements. Many label the President a "Marxist, a socialist, a Kenyan", blah blah blah. "We're right...everyone else is wrong." "People should think the way we do."

Do you guys get it? Do you care? This isn't about whether your whacko alternative view of the universe is real or not. Its about the fact that the majority of the electorate doesn't buy it today and isn't going to buy it tomorrow. Do you want the GOP to be a permanent minority party? Do you want Hillary Clinton or some other democrat to win the presidency in 2016?

Over the years, I've found two groups of people in politics: 1. Group one is pragmatic and realizes that it isn't going to get everything it wants and instead tries to swing the electorate as much in its direction as possible and get as much of the type of change it wants as it practically can; 2. Group two is idealistic. It got involved in politics because it was angry or unhappy at something politicians were doing. These people are idealogues and believe compromise is a dirty word. Its all or nothing for them. And you know what? It usually ends up being NOTHING, because the public at large isn't going to buy all of any party's agenda.

Do what you want. But with a rising population of minorities in this country the rules of the game are changing. You can change with them or you can slowly lose the last power and influence that you have.

Yes, the GOP definitely needs to lose the Tea Party before they find themselves on the endangered species list. They might want to adopt the Green Party instead.

Conservatives don't like him. It has only to do with his ideology not his skin color. To suggest different makes you the racist.
As a matter of fact, I attended 2 of them in 2008. They were an unorganized rabble, each determined to out-shout the guy next to him, both times. There was no real leadership and no organization at all.
That was the tea party's problem from the first. They fiercely opposed just about everything, but never offered anything positive. Even worse, everyone who is a self-proclaimed leader has shown to be just in it for the bucks. They were all very eager to sell out to the Koch bros., and they sold cheap.

The negativity worked in 2010, when America was reeling and were unsure that things would ever get better, but that year was the turning point. By 2011, the bloom was already off the tea rose, and by this year, all that was left were the thorns.

Sarah Palin's only truly intelligent moment was when she realized the tea party was over and decided not to run. She read the writing on the wall.

Republicans should stick to their right wing conservative beliefs and keep those tea party members, too.
We Democrats love you for it !

I think it's the other way around. The Tea Party was just fine before the Republicans latched onto it and turned it into something other than a group of people concerned about one thing: excessive government spending.

The Tea Party and the Republicans are one in the same. They can't lose the Tea party.

And they should stick to their core belief, that women should be forced to give birth to rapist's babies, because they are a gift from god.
