The best response by WalMart/Target/etc workers to such conditions is to better themselves so that WalMart/Target/etc is not their only employment option.
And screw unions. I saw the unions destroy my hometown industries in the '70s/'80s.
I do, however, agree in principal that stores should not engage in the silly Black Friday GreedFest that has become worse each year.
There's a conflict of interest. You have to keep in mind the goal orientation of the retail industry. These employees have a passion for providing the best shopping experience and are striving to constantly improve this experience. If consumers want to shop, it gives the retail industry the opportunity to live out their passion. What's interesting about black Friday is that it poses quite a challenging scenario that is in need of improvement. It's the ideal time for retail employees to get into it, innovate the process and enjoy their passion.
As a former retail employee and a wife of another former retail employee, neither of us had a "passion for providing the best shopping experience". We worked hard, we were kind and thoughtful to customers, etc. But it certainly wasn't a passion. Especially when we were both forced to work holidays and spend time away from our families so people could buy an iPad on Thanksgiving night. It's a complete crock.
I woke up 5.30 AM this morning and have to be at work 6.30 AM, and I work until 7 PM
Capitalism sucks
I do that routinely year round, but actually I wake up at 4:45a, have to be at work by 6pm, and worked 12 hour shifts.
In fact I know people that did that for 6 days a week for months.
I am actually on a 12 days on, 2 days off, as in I work 12 days straight, and get 2 days off. 8-12 hour shifts, 2 weeks ago actually I pulled a nice 15.5 hour shift.
No holiday, just normal working.
Not neccesarily retail, but I worked for Movie theatres, I have worked every day of the year. New years eve, 4th of july, thanksgiviing day, xmas day, easter sunday, etc.... Usually extremely busy days, but I knew tht when I signed on for the job.
