I see Hillary being thrown out there for 2016 already, as well as others such as Condoleeza Rice and Sarah Palin. 1 out of every 5 US senators is now female, so it only makes sense women can be discussed as serious contenders for the presidency.
Or can they? I'm not so sure. No matter your political persuasion, I see many double-standards still being trotted out for females which don't exist for their male counterparts. The first criticism which seems to be made whenever Hillary is mentioned is her age in four years, and particularly how old and "haggard" she looks now. Women are always judged by their appearance first and foremost. Let's go back to the 2012 Republican primary; Michelle Bachmann definitely had her drawbacks, but she was never taken seriously as a candidate by her own party...was she really any worse than Rick freakin' Perry? Herman Cain? She even had to state in the debates, "I am a serious candidate for president".
The United States is a violent, aggressive culture, where a woman in the highest position of authority would be seen as a weakness by many. Just like in corporate America, women have to fight twice as hard for the same amount of respect given to men in the higher positions in politics. What's worse, women still tend to bring each other down, while racial minorities are often more quick to come together and back their own.
Thoughts? I'd like to think in the 21st century, we're beyond this kind of mentality, but I don't see it quite yet.
The 2008 primaries proved we aren't ready for a woman president. Remember Hillary the hillbilly and pantsuit Hillary. I doubt that I will see one in my lifetime.
Why not?

Maybe it's way past time for a change.
I agree, and did not ask in the sense of being "ready" as much as being "willing". I don't see it happening in my lifetime, but I suppose the same was said about a black man as president.
Any chance Sarah Palin ever had to be President ended with the Katie Couric interview. Send the dumb sociaist back to Alaska where she belongs.
