Fine with me... I don't live in Oklahoma. Let 'em do what they want--a monument in a building in a state I'll never visit has no bearing on my life.
Furthermore if states in the Bible Belt want to teach creationism instead of evolution or ban all abortions--I really don't care at this point either. There's alot larger problems in the world to deal with right now.
It's funny that they failed to check the spelling before they put up a monument... Sounds like amateur hour.
Quote:
A Ten Commandments monument is up on the grounds of the state Capitol, but it didn't pass spell check.
“Remember the Sabbeth day, to keep it holy,” reads one.
“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidseruent,” reads the last one.
Rep. Mike Ritze, whose family paid for the monument that was put up Thursday, said the monument company has been contacted and will correct the errors to the words Sabbath and maidservant.
pretty silly, imo. i'm sure there would have been a number of private property owners that would have been more than happy to have had it ( and i would have absolutely supported their right to display it proudly ).
the thing i find comical about the "10" debate is how they actually stack up against US law:
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
that would be a direct violation of the US constitution to try and enforce.
TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
not against US law, which can be blatantly seen by attending any weekend crafts fair. it would be a violation of the first amendment to enforce.
THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'
not against US law, gawddammit. it also would be a violation of the first amendment to enforce.
FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
not against US law. ask the NFL. most likely would be a violation of the US constitution to enforce depending on the circumstance.
FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.
not against the law to be disrespectful to parents. ask any teenager. yet again....... would be unconstitutional to try and enforce.
SIX: 'You shall not murder.'
that one's good.
SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'
not illegal criminally but can get you in a heap of trouble in divorce court. i'm assuming that there are no longer anti-adultery laws left in the US.
EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'
also good.
NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
yep, slander and libel.
TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'
advertising, the life blood of our free market system, is completely based on the premiss that you covet other people's junk.
