Opposition to same sex marriage is kinda like segregation when you consider the fact that a gay couple can't get all those married tax deductions and crap like that.
The comparison I'd make is that it was legal in parts of the US to enslave a colored person up until 1865 while it was legal in parts of the US to execute a person for being homosexual up until 1873.
were there gay slaves? likely...
were slaves allowed to be gay? Hell no.
gay slaves that's another story entirely.
during the days of segregation weren't gays also shunned among some in every ethnic group?
this thread is invalid.
Homosexuality as defined today wasn't very well-known until the late 19th century. A gay person in the 1860s would have probably been married to a woman and had a "friends with benefits" relationship with one of his male friends, most definitely on the down low. The idea of homosexual relationships completely replacing heterosexual ones was a 20th century invention.
I don't think even societies such as Rome which had completely open and tolerated homosexuality had the same practices gays do today. Most of them even married women and had open sex with men on the side.
I just finished watching the movie Lincoln and it made me think. Same sex marriage is the biggest cultural issue of our day, much akin to slavery in 1865. I am not saying these two issues are the same, but their place in politics is similar. Do you think somebody who is opposed to same sex marriage is the same as somebody supportive of slavery in 1865? What about segregation in the 1950s? Discuss!
You really are obsessed with this topic. Every thread you start is about gays. Sure you're not hiding something? This is getting quite trollish.
LGBT activists very commonly compare anybody who opposes same sex marriage to people who supported various forms of oppression against African Americans in our nations history.
And this must be at least the 15th time you've brought this up and tried to make this comparison. Just admit it. You can't stand homosexuality, for whatever reason. I'm sure you're aware of the studies that show people who are the most homophobic are usually repressing their own homosexual feelings.
