Actually I support getting the drinking age all together, having a set age just encourages people to binge drink when they hit their legal age rather than ease into it like it is done in Europe. No one there cares about one's 21st birthday.

Okay, come back you grow up and accept responsibility for YOUR CHOICES.
No. But it is, in part, MADD's fault that drinking under the age of 21 is a crime. And I don't blame someone for partaking in an activity that society has so arbitrarily deemed to be illegal.

Exactly. God forbid anyone in this country creates laws based on common sense.

You know why drinking is not such a problem in Europe? Two good reasons.

1. It's not a big deal to them. "Your ten year old had a beer? What was he waiting for, college?!" Yeah, they can get trashy about it just like us, but it's even more common for people to have good moderation. And imagine why... because they learn to do so while still growing up!

2. Europe has way better transportation than a lot of places in the US. If you get drunk most places in Europe you can take a bus, or the light rail, or the subway, etc. You don't have to drive everywhere, which creates the scenario leading to drunk driving. But I guess that's because public transportation is socialism, which is terrible and expecting most people to have a car that eats up half their yearly pay is way better...

In part...perhaps.

But is it not YOUR STATE makes the final determination... ?

Yeah, I'd love to be on the streets and freeways every weekend with a bunch of 18 year olds with a year of actual driving experience driving 60-100 mph.

Yes. The state makes the decision, in part, based on the intense lobbying efforts of organizations like MADD.

Good points made by both sides, but what I absolutely disagree with is the penalty as handed down to the OP. Penalties should fit the crime. I don't blame MADD as much as I blame the government/alcohol-drug rehab industrial complex.

GTFO of my and my family's life, MADD.

Okay so I am 20 and was at a bar and got a minor in possession of alcohol ticket. I got out of court about 30mins ago and guess what the sentence is? fine, community service, alcohol awareness, and 30 day license suspension. Now I am stuck in line behind 40 people waiting to see the clerk to see how much of each I have to pay/do. That Coor's Light was not worth it.
MADD sucks

20 years old. You can bang a chick, get a job, buy a house.. buy a boat.. do anything legal.. 'cept have a drink.

That's just stupid.

In France, children drink wine. Know what happens when the extraordinary becomes ordinary? Pople stop caring. People stop wanting what they can't have.
None of those other things kill people.

Your request is denied.

Don't like it, move to a state where the drinking age is 18.

Make your will first.

So you are pissed off because you are too stupid to get an adult to buy you a beer and drink it at home? Instead you go to a bar where you get caught and its now on your record.
We have laws because too many young people like you think they are invincible and go drinking, end up drunk, and then kill someone while driving home. Don't like it, drink at home and save a life. You get no sympathy from me.

Years ago when I lived up in Virginia there was a wreck on the interstate, while some good samaritans were helping tht injured, a drunken 19 year old sailor plowed into the wreck at 90mph killing a bunch of people. He had gotten drunk at a bash on base given by his higher ups. Needless to say, those in charge got in some serious trouble and the sailor is in jail where he belongs.
