It would be right up Californian's alley to rush to Texas for those super-cheap housing prices and not check out the sky-high property taxes!
I had a friend, working in real estate, in Austin, TX, and that was the biggest shock to fleeing Californians: those hard-to-swallow property taxes. And, in scattered areas of Texas, sales tax on groceries! That was a shock to me visiting my friend in Austin: sales taxes on groceries, which I've never paid before, anywhere I've lived!
As my friend would say: Everything is big in Texas!
Texas by far has some of the most arrogant, wreckless, angry drivers in the USA.
And wait until they have their first accident, and get nearly nothing for their cars or if they are hurt. (though there are some decent people here that do have real insurance companies)...But remember - Gov Perry is selling the state as "Business Friendly"...(Which means people unfriendly).
There are some great people in Texas..But driving here is a nightmare...Look at this wreck that just happened on Thanksgiving...I am sorry people lost their lives and got hurt..But it is a proper description of how the drivers here act on the road (and I do not mean the ones that died or got hurt) But, overall most were speeding in a pea-soup fog (or doing the max permissible). Most people would have the common sense to look for the first rest stop or simply get off the highway until the weather cleared..
Did you read either one of those articles as the first one is based on 2011 April to be exact. And they went there to see how TEXAS could have added 100,000 JOBS during the previous 12 MONTHS California's Job Growth Outpaces Texas's - Businessweek
Even based on the jobs created they still have the COUNTRIES 3RD highest UNEMPLOYMENT Rate at 10.3%.
Compared to TEXAS 7.2% Even with the job growth in CA in 18 of the past 24 months TEXAS has outpaced CA.
Just noticed that the right-wing media source used in the original post refers to the U-Haul Index of 2009. Talk about desperate!
The latest U-Haul Index clearly shows California cities as some of the most popular in the country. In fact, two California cities - Oakland and San Francisco - are higher on the list than the most popular city in Texas (Dallas).
What, people leaving the deep Blue State of Calif for the rapidly turning Blue State of Tex? Astounding! 2009 huh? Perhaps that is why Tex is turning Blue.
Despite the state’s efforts to redistribute the wealth from those who earned it to those who didn't, “the ranks of the poor have swollen to the point that the state, with 12% of the nation’s population, accounts for one-third of its welfare cases,” notes Kotkin.
This is what I have a trouble wrapping my head around. California is arguably one of the most economic progressive states in the country. It redistributes wealth from the wealthy to the poor via several mechanisms namely the tax code. We are told by liberals that redistribution narrows the income inequality gap and helps the poor. Yet the poor in Cali have grown in number. Something is amiss in liberal land.
