Why? Because conditions don't have to be so bad for those on the bottom as they are.
They are NOT bad. Have you never been to a third world country? Our "poor" live like kings, comparatively. Free food, clothing, housing, cell phones, cable TV, etc., etc...

Burger flippers generally don't get free food, clothing, housing (but they do pay through the nose for housing), cell phones, cable TV, etc, etc.

I don't understand this attitude from the supposed "patriotic" Republicans.
America SHOULD have the best taken care of underclass in the World. We built the greatest society any country has known specifically because of the large and prosperous Middle Class, one that had never before been seen in any society, one that has since dwindled when our Corporate controlled Government decided to ship the real jobs that actually produce things out of the country to take advantage of slave wages. The workforce in the good ol' US of A is now mostly all paper pushers and money manipulators.
Why do you want our own citizens to have less and less instead of building our prosperous society back?
The one that will be revered for centuries in history books?

Not many countries can boast that their poor have cellphones, xboxes, 100" plasma TVs, guaranteed college tuition paid for, etc.
One of the cornerstones of this ongoing national discussion has been the unwillingness of those with money to pay fairly for the labor of those who perform non professional services. Read the old labor histories that go back to the days just after the reformation of European serfdom, or in our own southern states where black labor was finally but grudgingly compensated, you will see how the notion of social class became the foundation for stratified wage constructs. Today the world is suffering because these notions of "value" have become the determining factor in how humans must live. Many times throughout our history the study of fair labor compensation has been undertaken by numerous groups. Most of the conclusions of these studies suggest that there wouldn't be a large spread in the pay for work accomplished in a fair society. Would that mean that those who now are Doctors or others who earn high incomes would suddenly decide to become landscapers or factory workers? Of course we know the answer, but there is something else here that comes into play, status and privilege.
Some here on the forum state that "low skill" "deserves" low pay, even though these low skilled jobs are absolutely necessary to round out the required shape of our economy, are we to believe that the so called professional class of workers will build and maintain a national economy that provokes the envy of the world? The real welfare queens, those who take the most dollars for the least return, are the various multi national corporations that nurse at the government teat, yes they provide jobs but so do those dollars coming from the pockets of those on the sundry of aid programs, just ask Walmart, or the numerous grocery stores that are the real "winners" in the redistribution of our money by the government.
"Producers" vs "dependents", please read a little on economic theory to understand the complexities of these issues, it's a no brainer that we can't have (and never had) full employment, but of course knowing that requires a bit of reading on economic theory, and, this being America we know that any real study of an issue means taking some time to THINK, not just respond with a cute sound bite. It isn't an easy thing to fix, the people who are not going to be Doc's or Lawyers can't be relegated to some kind of serf status and left to become less of an asset and more of a obligation and then be blamed for their plight. This subject has been studied to death by some very intelligent folks and they can't figure it out to everyones satisfaction. I guess there will always be some who refuse to value other human beings as equals, that would take away from their feeling of superiority. The tax money I spend on other individuals is the price I pay for living in a civil society, do I agree with all that my government does? Hell no, but, I refuse to get my "mean suit "on in order to save a few bucks.........
