Of course not, food stamps should only be used for fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat.
Junk food manufacturers, like Pepsico, spend serious millions each year in campaign donations and ongoing lobbying of Congress to protect their interests, which includes allowing SNAP benefits to be used to buy chips and soda.
To the one's who voted yes, were you just kidding or are you serious?
One vote was an accident already explained in their post.
Did 8 other people have an accident when they clicked yes?
I voted yes.
It's just a matter of time. These EBT cards are treated like a monthly allowance from Uncle Sam.
FF places are pressuring Congress to let them be used there.
They are accepted in gas stations for pete's sake. How many people do their weekly food shopping in a gas station ?
Call it for what it is and stop tracking it. That EBT card is government allowance for the poor to spend.
So let them spend it as they wish. The kids won't starve because we're feeding them in school now since they aren't being used for healthy food anyway.
I dont think frozen food or ready made food should be allowed with food stamps either. making all your food from scratch will make for better meals and make the food stamps last longer.
What you or I think does not matter. It's all about appeasing the junk fook king lobby and wiping the palms of campaign doners. No doubt some congressmen rationalize it all by telling themselves they are saving jobs and in a warped way, they are.
Qualifying purchases are established at the Federal level. Alcohol and tobacco products are not eligible for SNAP. States determine eligibility, allocation and distribution.
Liquor stores usually sell soda and salty snacks which are qualified purchases under the Snap Program.
Some also sell milk and bread, too.
I had never thought much about it before, but today I drove by a beer and wine shop that had a big sign saying "we accept food stamps." This was very surprising and upsetting to me. In my opinion, food stamps should be there solely as a safety net to prevent people from starving, they shouldn't enable you to buy things that are not basic life necessities (i.e. luxuries). Luxuries should be something that one can only acquire if one has disposable income that comes from working and contributing to society. By allowing people these luxuries without working for them, you allow people to be comfortable on food stamps, and don't put pressure on them to get jobs and get off of them. If the government were to allow people to only buy the basic necessities with food stamps, the government would put pressure on people to get jobs in order to get what they want but cannot get. This seems relatively obvious to me, and I was somewhat appalled to find out that you can buy alcohol with food stamps. Thoughts?
The answer is no, you cannot use food stamps to buy tobacco or alcohol. You also cannot buy deli sandwiches, ready roasted chickens etc 'deli' items.
Threads like this perpetuate the folk lore and sometimes serve to validate people's erroneous perceptions.
No doubt, some will take stuff like this as fact and tell 5 other like-minderd folk before the end of the day. We really are just a bunch of old ladies at the village well, on wash day.
