Not only should it not be allowed, I don't even think junk food should be covered by food stamps.
Call/write your congressman and ask him and her to ignore the junk food lobbies and restrict SNAP to healthy foods. Let me know if you are told the story about the Pepsi drivers having to eat, too.
I live in a relatively affluent area. I have a choice of more than 22 grocers in less than 10 minutes.
The gas stations, CVS, Walgreens, $ stores sell food, too. I see the Snap signs everywhere, including the 2 super high end specialty grovers and prime meat butcher shops, too.
SNAP is restrictive. The Welfare debit cards- not so much when one can withdraw cash and buy whatever.
Yeah..in the store. But there's ways around it to get the cash equivalent.
Many states now have a single card for all welfare payments which include SNAP and TANF.
EBT is just the card itself. This thread is about food stamps and that's what I was addressing.
I've seen one woman put through 3 different LoneStar cards to pay for her groceries(Texas EBT) and the cashier never questioned her. I guess you can use your mother's card and your aunt's card and your sister's card along with your own ?
How does it concern you what people purchase with their food stamps? I am not American but I assume you can buy junk food with food stamps but you don't seem to question that, considering America has the highest obesity rate in the world. If somebody wants to sacrifice food for cigs and alcohol, then leave them be. They will suffer by way of starvation, malnutrition if that brings any comfort to your shallow mind.
I also think you should be more concerned about where the majority of your tax dollars are really going. (wars, greedy bankers)

I was not aware of this and now better understand where you are coming from.
It's probably less costly for some states to combine benefits on one card. When this happens, controls go out the door.
I am trending to believe the admin costs to prevent and detect fraud and abuse likely exceed savings that could be obtained.

I didn't mention junk foods because those are harder to define and classify than cigarettes and alcohol. Sure, I agree that foods that provide little or no nutritional value should be considered luxuries and should not be paid for with tax dollars either (e.g. I wouldn't want to be paying for someone to purchase caviar). I say this, because the money they are receiving is partly my money, and I do not believe that such I should be paying for these unnecessary, frivolous purchases. Rather, I choose to hold them accountable for spending the money responsibly, just as I hold politicians accountable for spending my money in a responsible way. If certain foods could be classified as "junk foods" if they don't meet certain nutritional thresholds, then I don't believe food stamps should pay for those either, however as the system exists, there is no such categorization.

I doubt it.
No ID is required of them when used.
It took investigative journalism to bring to light the high numbers of out of state SNAP usage in Hawaii, California and Florida. When the states were approached for comment, the majority said they would investigate.
It also took investigative journalism to bring to light the cash portion of TANF being withdrawn in casinos.
Again, the comments from states were that they would investigate it.

Yup, as long as the can has a nutrition label. Red Bull does so that's allowed.
Monster wasn't but they just did a big repackaging and renamed the brand and guess what..there's a nutrion label which means you can buy it with SNAP.
I had never thought much about it before, but today I drove by a beer and wine shop that had a big sign saying "we accept food stamps." This was very surprising and upsetting to me. In my opinion, food stamps should be there solely as a safety net to prevent people from starving, they shouldn't enable you to buy things that are not basic life necessities (i.e. luxuries). Luxuries should be something that one can only acquire if one has disposable income that comes from working and contributing to society. By allowing people these luxuries without working for them, you allow people to be comfortable on food stamps, and don't put pressure on them to get jobs and get off of them. If the government were to allow people to only buy the basic necessities with food stamps, the government would put pressure on people to get jobs in order to get what they want but cannot get. This seems relatively obvious to me, and I was somewhat appalled to find out that you can buy alcohol with food stamps. Thoughts?
OMG..your post could have been a moot point if you researched, You CANNOT buy cigarettes/booze with SNAP assistance.
Ever occur to you the Liquor store sells some food/water etcetera!

I'll play Devil's Advocate here, and say that I think this is fine.
basically, the welfare money goes back into the economy anyway.
so if the recipient spends all his food stamps on booze and cigs, then he'll be without food until his next cheque comes in.
perhaps that will inspire him to get a job, cut down on his drinking, or sort something else out.
kind of learn the hard way??
