I'm guessing that not only does he still have the boots but he was probably not really shoeless to begin with. Most likely the bare feet are a ploy to increase his panhandling revenue. To paraphrase a previous poster: unless you have been there yourself, you probably don't really understand this man's problem. And he's counting on that.
This reminds me of the old attege, " you can lead a horse to water ,but you still can't make it drink" This man just likes it the way it is, you know he has the shoes , its up to him to wear them or freeze his feet.

unfortunately when "one flew over the cuckoo nest" came out -- it inspired gov reagan to shut down all the mental hospitals and put that poor nut on the street corner.

"People like that" generally just want to be left alone. That's why they live the way they do in the first place. I'm really annoyed that the media couldn't just let him be and had to track him down to get yet more mileage out of the poor guy.
Whether he's "grateful" or not is between him and the Officer that did him the kindness. I don't believe the Officer did it for gratitude, he did it because he wanted to. It should have been left at that and should not have been capitalized on by the media on either of their accounts, now they both have intrusions they likely don't want and never asked for.
Exactly. Remember the homeless guy with the "golden voice" a while back? Similar story, they tried to to help, but his emotional/mental issues kept him from being able to take advantage. It's sad, yes, but some people either don't want or cannot utilize the help offered... having lived in San Francisco (homeless mecca) for many years, I came to realize that rather quickly. That doesn't mean I won't help as I see fit, but to expect miracles or eternal gratitude as a result is naive.
Would be pointless. The court systems are running at full as it is. They would give him a fine, And for what? He could not pay it anyway and has not much to lose sadly.

Actually it was the liberals who sued on behalf of the patients asserting their liberty and rights were violated by forcing them into institutions. They won a Supreme Court ruling which Reagan had to abide by.

You know nothing about him yet are so quick to judge. He's done nothing wrong but he's called an SOB by you. Sorry I don't get it. What makes you such an authority on some homeless person you saw for a few minutes on the news.

When I was a kid I spent a long time as a street urchin in Boston. I know places in Boston most people have never heard of much less seen. Under the building on beacon Hill are massive coal bins made of arched brick. There is power, some heat leaks thru and at one point you could even hook up a phone if you had one handy
Other kids and old drunks and assorted wretches all lived in there.... In some ways it was like living Oliver, except no one was in charge. I recall a old geezer calling himself Preston, and he was about 6 days older than God. He couldn't walk with out pushing a pedal bike to help hold him up.
Sometimes i would share what ever food and drink i had with him, if I still had anything left..
I would work when i could find any deal dope when I couldn't. That was a better life than living at my drunk mother's. Less dangerous too.
I saw all types of guys just like this one. many said I reminded them of their own sons and some of them thought i were their sons. others would beat me up and try to rob me and sometimes they did rob me of what little I had..
This guy sold those boots and has long ago drank the cash up.....
Expecting them to improve is plain stupid.. These people who can live and just survive this way are nothing like us on CD..
