Asked about the $100 all-weather boots Officer Larry DePrimo gave him on Nov. 14, Hillman says he's hidden them because "they are worth a lot of money."
He says he's grateful for the gift, but he wants "a piece of the pie" because the photo was posted online "without permission."
Hey, if I run a story about your rants in my local rag, and if it goes viral, would you want some change from it, if I make money off of you?
Well, Maybe he sold them or is just looking for handouts. Regardless, The officer's act was awesome and this takes nothing away from the story.
The homeless man's family spoke to the media. They offered him help but he just want's to be left alone. he call's them once a year to let them know he's alive. Can't help those who will not accept it.
Most homeless people are mentally unstable. It doesn't lessen the gesture or intent of the officer. People should give because they personally feel it's the right thing to do. If you don't feel it is or you are doing it because you expect praise in return. Then you are giving for selfish reasons and are no better than the ungrateful person.
That's just plain sad! You should never look a gift horse in the mouth! I would hope that people like that would be grateful and not greedy! Just plain sad!
There's other articles out there with more information on him.
When asked how he became homeless he refused to answer.
He has 2 daughters (mid 20's) that he visits every few years.

"People like that" generally just want to be left alone. That's why they live the way they do in the first place. I'm really annoyed that the media couldn't just let him be and had to track him down to get yet more mileage out of the poor guy.
Whether he's "grateful" or not is between him and the Officer that did him the kindness. I don't believe the Officer did it for gratitude, he did it because he wanted to. It should have been left at that and should not have been capitalized on by the media on either of their accounts, now they both have intrusions they likely don't want and never asked for.
