is a nonsensical discussion without context.

First, the effective tax rate for people like Mitt Romney is single digits. I know; I have a relative who prepares tax returns for people in that bracket. The effective Federal tax rate is a joke, with all the loopholes that exist.

Second, unless you view historical context of what percentages have been paid, there is no way to judge whether X% is "fair."

Third, current economic conditions necessitate a re-evaluation of the tax burdens, and it's only natural that the government look to those who have done best most recently to contribute.

A. Incorrect. It was about 13% as I recall. Loopholes factor into the equation.

B. Historical context is not necessary in-the-least to determin if something happening in the here-and-now is "fair". Fair stands on its own, with or without historical prescedent.

The injustice here is that loopholes will continue to exist for the rich and the lawmakers to skirt their tax burden. The lawmakers would rather remove the mortgage interest deduction than remove loopholes that keep their own money from becoming taxable income.

The NFL, NHL, and Pro Golf Assoc. are 501c6 tax exempt organizations. Do you know that when a player is fined in the NFL, the fine is tax deductible? C'mon man.

Do you know that there are tax breaks for Hollywood film makers - both state and federal?

People can claim they want tax increases for the rich - but the selective rich will continue to legislate their own tax breaks and loopholes.
