I don't know if he was being serious to Jay Leno (about Obama's Christmas trees in the White House) when he said it but if he was, how can that be? Christmas trees are round!!
He is OBVIOUSLY poking fun at those people who see an offense in anything Obama does, not matter what.
I watched the interview when it aired. If I remember correctly, O'Reilly actually says that there is plenty of "hard" news out there but that he sells controversial opinion because it makes much more money.
There are a few things I don't understand when it comes to O'Reilly or, more precisely, about his devout followers:
1.) He labels himself as being on the entertainment-side of things yet people seem to believe that he presents "hard" and "unbiased" news, regardless of his assurances in several interviews that this is not the case.
2.) He outright (and repeatedly) states that his only reason for reporting these one-sided controversies is to make money - clearly off of those who buy into the craziness he "reports." In other words, he makes money off one of the most gullible demographics in the US. Yet, that very same demographic is unable to come to grips with the fact that they are being used to make billions of dollars. Alas, that this is so speaks volumes about the intellectual capacities of his listeners/watchers.
All in all, I hate what people like O'Reilly are doing to the nation in the name of the almighty dollar. On the other hand, I really quite like that he is upfront about it and I am impressed that he has found such an ingenious way to make a very, very good living.
I do find it sad that he feels the need to exploit the gullible segment of our population, though. Oh well, it makes for some crazy threads on this forum, too.
The scary thing in all this is not that Bill O'Reilly uses absurdism to poke fun at a specific group of people, it's that the target of his humor doesn't get the joke.

O'Reilly's wisecracks are rarely funny, but that one was pretty good.
