The interesting facet falling off the table in terms of public discourse is capital gains and dividends taxes. Capital gains go from 15 to 20%, and dividends which 20% of those with equity stakes get, are taxed, post fiscal cliff as ordinary income (39.6% max)!!, not at 15% max rate in effect now.
Those 2 things are why JB wants a deal. They would amount to far larger increases than the 250K plus tax rate on ordinary income.
If the cliff occurs, the pre Bush/Obama taxbill rates are here to stay. There would be no effective GOP bargaining position in 2013.
I suggest he back off or he could lose his job. I see the Tea Party as the only responsible representatives in congress. Maybe it should become a party on its own.
Totally agree. If this were to happen it's the Republican party that would die off. It would deserve to as it's too wishy washy and doesn't stand for anything. John Boehner is an example of everything that's wrong.
Good. It means the Republicans are taking a tiny move towards sanity; the lunatics should not be in the driver's seat controlling the entire party. That's why Republicans lost the last election which should have been a sure thing.
If Boehner is considered the 'sanity' of the party, God help us all!
If dems think Boehner is the sane one, it's time to give him the boot! The absolute last thing Rs need is to be sane like dems. When dems disagree with Rs, you know Rs are on the right track.
It was unrealistic for Tea Party legislators to go to Washington with the assumption that the country would use one set of principals and it would be theirs. That's not a democracy. It was also wrong for voters to believe that one set of principals were needed to govern with. It it also wrong for a person to believe that their set of principals are far superior to another person's when it comes to governance. Those ideas work better in a Monarchy or dictatorship but it was reckless to send people to Washington to work in a democracy with those beliefs.
Looks like Boehner knows what the writing on the wall says - ie that the GOP is going to have to cave on the issue of Tax rates etc - and is making moves to punish those in the GOP who seem willing to stand in his way of making the necessary concessions to Obama.
"...All four lawmakers had voted against the summer 2011 deal negotiated between Republican leaders and President Barack Obama for extending the government's ability to borrow money in exchange for $1 trillion in spending cuts and the promise of another $1 trillion in reduced deficits. Three of the four, the exception being Schweikert, voted against the Ryan-written GOP budget blueprint that the House passed last March.
Their removal from key committees with jurisdiction over the two issues was viewed by some as a signal to other Republican lawmakers to look favorably on whatever final deal Boehner and Obama put together to avert a "fiscal cliff" combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts in January..."

In the 1960s, Buckley, largely through his position at the helm of National Review, displayed political courage and sanity by taking on the John Birch Society, an influential anti-Communist group whose members saw conspiracies everywhere they looked.
Fast forward half a century. The modern-day Birchers are the Tea Party. By loudly espousing extreme rhetoric, yet holding untenable beliefs, they have run virtually unchallenged by the Republican leadership, aided by irresponsible radio talk-show hosts and right-wing pundits. While the Tea Party grew, respected moderate voices in the party were further pushed toward extinction. Republicans need a Buckley to bring us back.
The tea partiers don't seem to understand politics. Their unmoveable position makes them an obstruction to addressing issues and as speaker, Boehner is tasked with getting things done. Pushing these guys aside is a move he had to do, or else lead his house to an electoral drubbing in two years. The public is expecting DC to break the stalemate and act in the nation's best interest. Congressmen are supposed to earn their fat paychecks, not sit on their hands and shout "no" repeatedly.

The tea party is Obama's best friend. Because of them he was able to get the Independent vote. They turn reasonable people away. Lets keep them.
