Political consultant Moxie Media has huge year after huge fine | Local News | The Seattle Times
A Seattle political consulting firm called "Moxie Media" was caught engaging in illegal campaign tactics. The resulting fine was one of the biggest in state history--almost $300,000 including legal fees that they agreed to pay.
The campaign where they got caught was a state senate primary, with a conservative Dem incumbent, a liberal Dem challenger, and a long-shot/no-shot GOP hobby candidate. Their strategy was to oust the conservative Dem by promoting the Republican in the primary. But to do that, they had to cover up the source of their money, which came from liberal interests (primarily labor), That was illegal under state law. It proved successful--the incumbent conservative Dem was ousted in the primary, then the more liberal Dem cruised to easy victory in the general election.
But what's interesting is what happened to the firm after they got caught. Were they shunned by legit Dem candidates? Did they go out of business? All end up working at a Denny's or Starbucks? Not quite:

"Moxie Media is feeling especially thankful this year," wrote CEO Lisa MacLean in a thanksgiving e-mail to clients. Maybe crime does pay after all.
