Syria loads chemical weapons into bombs; military awaits Assad's order - World News

Of course this is per the media, but few would argue military intervention should Assad start lobbing chemical weapons against his own people...

... except Iran who has a defense pact with Syria, that is. Enter Russia and China and we have WW3... and to top it off there are 500 billion dollars in mandatory defense cuts coming thanks to the "fiscal cliff" bru-ha.

One has to wonder if it isn't 1939 all over again. There are so many ways for things to go bad in the VERY near future.

We should stay out of the fray 100%.

I understand that we are placing forces on the Syrian border.

Indeed... they have been in Jordan for months:

Without Asking Congress, Obama Puts U.S. Troops on Syria Border

Syria is undergoing a messy factional civil war, sort of like what happened in Lebanon in the 1970's and 80's. We did put American soldiers into Lebanon back then, and it didn't really help. When you see a blender, it's generally best not to jam your hand in there and stop its blades with your bones.

Why kill the people that put you in power? You're only ever in power if the people who put you there want you to be there. It's a nice way to get killed, killing people.

So, I don't buy it. What is really going on? I'm assuming he's like every person ever in that he doesn't want to die.

As it is, surely he realizes the way things are going will lead to him not being in power, or him not being alive. So, I honestly don't know what his motivations are.

But somehow, killing people for killing people's sake doesn't seem to fit.

If there is a western intervention, Iran will rush to the aid of Syria every bit as much as they did during Operations Orchard (the 2007 Israeli bombing raid on a Syrian reactor). Which is to say, not at all.

The idea that Tehran would blunder into the midst of a Syrian confrontation with the West, for no useful gain to Tehran, is only slightly less unbelievable than that notion that either the Russians or the Chinese are remotely inclined to stick their necks out to defend Tehran.

They don't support Tehran for the scenery... Russia and China's interests are to keep the West from political domination of the Middle East and the last major supplies of quality black stuff.

Likewise we don't "hate" Iran because the Ayatollah's beard is crusty or because women should be in bikinis instead of Hijabs... Iran (or more accurately, Iran's oil) just isn't under our control.

Anyway, the world runs on oil and whoever controls the oil is top-dog for the next 50 or so years. So I wouldn't be so sure Russia and China will sit back quietly and let us completely take over the Middle East.
