WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week as a temporary spike caused by Hurricane Sandy faded. Weekly first-time jobless claims have fallen back to a level consistent with modest hiring.
The Labor Department said Thursday that applications for unemployment benefits dropped 25,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 370,000.
New unemployment claims surged a month ago after the storm forced businesses to close in the Northeast. Applications jumped to 451,000 in the week that ended Nov. 10. People can claim unemployment benefits if their workplaces are forced to close and they are not paid.
The total number of people that are 'employed' does not matter as long as 47% of the population is recieving food stamps and more than 50% of the population makes less than $25,800 per year (and in some cases makes that much or less with children).
And it does not matter how many people are employed if the top 4% owns over 87% of the existing wealth.
The unemployment numbers whether or not they are 'good' or 'bad' are beyond irrelevant at this point. Tracking that figure would be the equivalent of checking the HDL cholesterol levels on a person that just got shot multiple times by an M-16.
