My husband is 6'2". He had a size 33" waist when I met him in HS and he still has a 33" waist. He can literally eat between 10-20,000 calories a day and never gains a pound. Before he leaves for work, he packs up at least 3 sandwiches, about 10-12 cookies, a banana, a couple of snack-pack bags of chips and a couple of sodas. He eats twice the dinner portion I do. Meanwhile, I just have to look at a chocolate bar and I gain a pound.

People are individuals. Children are individuals. Individuals have very different metabolisms. So do I believe that 850 calories is not enough to keep a 6'3" football player from being hungry? Why, yes I do.
How is his health? Being thin does not equal being healthy.

I'm hoping you are using that 10-20000 calorie figure per day merely for hyperbole as eating that many calories per day will ultimately lead to some serious health issues..

No hyperbole, the man can eat! He's a recovering alcoholic so he's making up in food for the calories he used to consume in beer. He works very hard physically all day long and has a metabolism like a hummingbird! My metabolism, otoh, is a smidge above dead.
