America almost certainly is not on the brink of a second civil war (although it still might not be a bad idea to remember that a lost presidential election is what set the last secession crisis in motion.) But in an era of polarized politics, a small group of armed radicals can have outsized influence, no matter how cockeyed their schemes. John Brown proved that. And a full-blown civil war isn’t necessary to produce mass casualties. Timothy McVeigh proved that.
The source is Daily Kos, so naturally its perspective must be taken into account. However, when the author cites chatter on hard-right websites like Tea Party Nation "about the Tree of Liberty (the one fertilized by the blood of both patriots and tyrants) and finding the courage to 'do what needs to be done'", anyone familiar with this forum knows that similar expressions are made here as well.
We certainly are not on the brink of insurrection: no one is going to be seizing the arsenal at Harper's Ferry any time soon. But for every five thousand basically harmless RWNJs just blowing off steam, there probably is one later-day McVeigh out there. Presumably, our mosaic of secret police and domestic intelligence organizations can handle them, but I really hope so.
Most of the people who signed the partition can not find the back of their rear with both hands tied behind their back. Honey boo boo most of them. Most do not know the difference between a Confederate battle flag and the first national flag.
Not mentioned yet is the deeds of actual violence committed by far left groups and individuals, far more than those done by right wingers. Have we forgotten so soon the Occupy Wall Street crazies and the damage they did? It is the far left that plans revolution in order to create their twisted idea of a Marxist society, while any counter violence by the right would be to prevent such an event from happening.

30,000 Occupiers have done less damage than one Timothy McVeigh.

And there is one later-day McVeigh, on the left, that is a close personal friend of Obama's. But of course, silence about left wing extremism.

The far left have their Black Bloc anarchists.
