Spanish will never be the primary/majority language of the United States. Assimilating into "mainstream" American culture is natural for 2nd generation immigrants and is just about complete by the third generation. The relative ease that immigrant groups have in being able to assimilate into American society has been one of this country's greatest strengths.

If asked, I suggest that Americans perfect American English and learn Latin American Spanish and/or Chinese Mandarin Standard. If they seem really gung-ho and the inquiry is honest, I further suggest studying Arabic Standard & Hindi.

Can't hurt any and they would be useful if not interesting things to peruse.

Why? Because arrogant, unassimilating Spanish speakers say so? Over my dead body!

Can anyone explain why racism is so pronounced in Australia and, apparently, New Zealand?

People are at least bilingual over much of the world. The last business I owned shipped to over sixty countries, and people in Indonesia and Greece were at least as fluent in English as a lot of the stateside customers. Even the Chinese weren't bad at English. Comprehension was great, but they had problems with the differences in syntax, just as I did when I took French and Latin.

Why do you assume that people who are speaking Spanish at the moment you happen to hear them, do not also speak English?

This is reason #114 that Europeans laugh at us. Most of them speak multiple languages. Not the arrogant American. Arrogant American don't need no stinkin' second language!!!

It makes me feel embarrassed. I took four years of Spanish and remember little of it, leaving me no better than these know-nothing ignoramuses.

Well I am guessing you are an older fellow, which in that case, the rule of learning a second language really doesn't apply to you. We are looking at the younger generations to evolve, not the older ones.
