When so many shooters are deemed mentally ill it would seem obvious to either fix the mentally ill or their access to guns... The later is probably the easiest.
Recall the shooting in Aurora ... people were saying if I had my gun in the theater everything would have turned out different.... We can't tell anything about any fool toting a gun. you look the same as the shooter. We aren't safer with more guns out there... that clearly hasn't worked. yet the same things are said... its the person, not the gun.... I can't take the person out of the equation but I can take the gun. You counter - where there is a will there is a way - ok, but I can get away from someone with a knife or a bullwhip,

I've always been a firm believer of evolutionary theory, but sheer volume of crap posted here by the gun advocates gives reason for serious doubt. A very troubling reminder of the large numbers of cavemen walking among us who are so fearful of life that they cannot face it without a high-tech club in their hand.
Ironic that it is the stupidity at the core of these neanderthals that keeps fanning the flames of their fears. Their petrified minds that assure unlimited guns for all are the reason that there are many more tragedies to come.
That so many so stubbornly refuse to see and understand that we have a population today that cannot be trusted with guns is beyond any attempt at understanding or explanation. Their stance presents a clear and present danger to every single man, woman, and child in America.

And what if he showed up with bombs? That's what Tim McVeigh and Kehoe used. So you can kick a knife out of someone's hand. Big deal. There are so many other options besides guns and knives out there.
Then how come they're hardly ever used?
Given that all these other options are so readily available, why do people use guns as the most prevalent mass murder weapon of choice?

In a way you are right. I think an individual like this kid may find a more terrible solution to his mental problems like blowing the school up and killing more. It's really hard to say. But situations like this are always going to bring the great embarrassment of the gun culture of this country front and center.
Mass killings like this that make the news are fairly rare. Security at schools will be tightened. This story will eventually fade from the public mind but legal and illegal guns on the street will continue to take their terrible toll in innocent lives.
This is the USA. No one is coming into your home to take your guns away. But we can suspend all future permits and end the manufacture of hand guns for private use. We can grandfather in the permits that are in existence today and end all future permits. We could cut drastically the guns in the future so this would be a safer country for our grandchildren.
And we could issue search warrants for illegal firearms. And put a mandatory prison sentence for being in possession of a non-permit handgun.
