What is missing from American gun laws is personal accoutability for the guns that you own. Also you can't get a gun if you can't prove you need a gun.
Australia had this same problem and solved it. Here's how........

Should anything be regulated? Should we have any laws at all? After all, if criminals will always get illegal guns, and criminals will always commit crimes, why even bother writing laws at all?
There will also always be criminals who get away, so maybe we shouldn't have police either.
Oh my God, OH_MY_GOD!!!! I guess Sydney and Melbourne - after gun control laws - have become crime-ridden hellholes comparable to Detroit, Miami, Atlanta and New Orleans... oh, wait... nevermind.
It doesn't matter if the world is happy go lucky and no one ever dies again if strict gun ownership laws are passed. It infringes on individual liberties guaranteed by the Constitution.
There is no cost that is too high to protect liberty.
(And I hope no one lashes out at me for that comment but that's what I believe)

So there were 3 million guns in circulation when the program began, or ~ 1 for every 7 people in the nation. We have an estimated 300,000,000 or nearly 1 per person. Very different landscape

See point above regarding the # of guns in circulation the US. Given that staggering figure, not to mention the 2nd amendment, it would be politically impossible to decline "self defense" as a legitimate reason to own a firearm.
The lead of the Australian gun reforms had this to say about the prospects of something similar happening in the US:
"So deeply embedded is the gun culture of the US, that millions of law-abiding, Americans truly believe that it is safer to own a gun, based on the chilling logic that because there are so many guns in circulation, one's own weapon is needed for self-protection. To put it another way, the situation is so far gone there can be no turning back."
