And anyone who actually types 'should of', 'could of' or 'would of' should lose a finger for each instance of stupidity.
How many mass homicides have we had EVER had by hammer, crow bar or baseball bat attack? How many people have walked into a movie theater or a shopping mall and shot the place up with a regular old bolt action hunting rifle? There's absolutely no reason for anyone outside of law enforcement or the military to own semi automatic weapons with a large capacity magazine. If someone attacks with a crow bar, or even a regular old rifle that has to be constantly reloaded, there's a decent chance that someone will be able to wrestle them down before they can kill an entire room of people. Some may die, but it's not going to be mass carnage. When you have the ability to mow down anyone in your way with rapid, constant fire, it becomes impossible to intervene. Banning assault weapons isn't going to stop all gun violence, but it should make a dent in the mass killings that we're seeing--we've had FOUR in this country during 2012. I'm sick of it. Sorry, but your argument is ridiculous. We need to do more, and we need to address other problems like glamorizing violence and addressing mental health issues, but this is a start.
I wonder how you're going to get the guns you want banned out of the hands of those people who don't really give a damn about the law. These incidents were carried out by deranged people, not rational people. The trick (and I don't know how to do it) is to keep these maniacs away from firearms. I don't think the men involved in the Colorado and Connecticut shootings would be concerned about a firearm ban. However I do think something must be done.
Everybody gets a shotgun. Short barreled 12 gauge. Cops too. Nobody but the military gets anything with an auto load mechanism.
Hunter guns are held by hunter clubs and signed out when hunting is under way. Same with target shooters.
Everybody is armed, the second amendment is satisfied and it becomes more difficult for the nutsy kid to get a good set of weapons.
