But why don't we make it difficult and costly for the more casual criminal or psychopath?

During WWII, France was under a police state ran by the Nazi, and the French underground still flourished. So even if we turned our country into a Nazi prison state, there would still be criminals with guns. Everyone would suffer, even the insane and the casual criminals.

I think you may be a part of the "let's get government to do something" crowd. You aren't sure what the "something" is, but those really smart temporary, publicly elected office holders and bureaucrats will think of something and it's sure to be brilliant, with no negative, or unforeseen consequences.

That's pretty much like saying drunks will still get behind the wheel of a car, drive off and kill people. So why don't we drive up the cost of cars for everyone in order to reduce drunk driving.

Makes sense, right?

People still poison people to death too. What's your point? Should we not have laws because someone will break them?

Most guns used by criminals were stolen from legal gun owners.

Maybe it's time to charge the owners for not properly securing their guns.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of articles on the Internet on how to build zip guns. Gun Powder is a relatively easy thing to make yourself.

If farmers, working with basic tools could build guns over a hot fire 400 years ago, imagine what people can do in their own garage. Imagine what is going to happen when 3D printing hits the consumer market.

Right now we can barely keep drugs out of the country, but even I, as a law abiding citizen know that I could find any illegal or even most legal drugs, I wanted within an hour. Does anyone think that there won't be a flourishing business in smuggling guns into the US too?

For the sake of argument, lets that the Police and Army go door to door nationwide and confiscate every gun they find. What is to stop criminals from upping their game by buying a gun and start going door to door in broad daylight? Now that they know they have nothing to fear from an armed owner, why wouldn't they take advantage of such an issue?

What if the criminals cut the top of the safe off and steal the guns?

Silly?

No it happens frequently.

I'm not saying no guns, but do people really need AK47s and AR15 assault rifles?

Why don't we make stealing guns a capital offence?
