The term gentrification emerged in the 60's and it was in reference to neighborhoods in Europe.

So probably not. Gentrification refers to the "gentry", it's about class and wealth and not about race. There are Blacks who belong to the gentry class you know

I agree. I think that through this process they're just trying to make the cities more affordable for neo-yuppies and out of town progressives who want to explore the so called wonders of getting mugged or winding up in a bad neighborhood to prove they're not prejudicial.

I know that. However, when crime is reduced in area because less minorities live there currently as opposed to the past when there was more crime... you'll never hear a liberal say "There is less crime because a predominance of minorities doesnt live there anymore". Even though deep down they know it to be true, they'll just spout "gentrification".

Yuppies are progressive now?? My image of yuppie is that of Charlie Sheen's character in Wall Street, hardly a progressive.

Whatever floats your boat.

Crime is not reducted because minorities move out, crime is reduced because poor people who sometimes happen to be minorities move out. Gentrification also occurs in areas with poor White people

I think that it is. When people say a neighborhood is "gentrifying" in the US they mean that white people are moving there and when there is complete "gentrification" it means that the neighborhood has more than 20% white people in it IMO.

It is a term I do consider to be a nice way of saying - get rid of the undesirable minority who was already there. Not specifically black people as Hispanics have faced "gentrifiers" as well.
