Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
Yes, everything is exactly the same as it was more than 200 years ago. I'm tired of the non-thinking right-wingers of today's Republican Party. Why even think at all, let's just stick to mentalities from 200 years ago.
*Just a question. There is no special meaning behind it.
Would you be willing to give up certain rights in order to feel safer or more secure? How far would you be willing to go for these things?
Example: Would you be willing to give up your right to deny the police entry to your house if some type of study showed that 85% percent of the houses that police searched had illegal weapons or substances (Just an example. I didn't quote any real study)? It would probably lower the crime rates in your area and get weapons and substances off the street.
It doesn't have to be that scenario though.
To some extent, sure I would. Obviously, it could be taken too far. I don't support randomly searching everyone's house. But society is based to some extent on a social contract that necessarily implies the giving up of at least some rights.
You give up the right to drive on whichever side of the road you feel like for the sake of public safety.
You give up the right to cut off that ambulance with sirens on for the sake of public safety.
You give up the right to own extremely dangerous substances or weapons for the sake of public safety.
There are tons of examples like this.
If we had never given up a single "right", we would still be swinging from trees in the jungle.
You already have. Look at the Patriot Act. Look at Homeland Security. You can beat your chest and act tough, but the truth is that Americans have given up some rights or privacy to investigate and combat terrorism or criminal activity.

Benjamin Franklin: “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”

No
To paraphrase Franklin- "Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither".
