So basically the executive vice president of the NRA has blamed everybody but themselves. How Republican of him. And he wants to put armed men in every school and he wants the government to pay for it. How about the NRA paying for it considering how much money they pay lobbyists to support them. Instead of lobbyists, they take that money and pay local law enforcement to staff all schools.
Actually, if you listened to, or read the transcript of (as I did) what he said, you would know that the NRA is funding the initiative that will develop a template for school safety and emergency response. He said that armed guards are just one of many components, and that they will work with all schools to help implement it as each school sees best, even if those schools decide that armed guards are not the route they want to take.
Where does it stop? We keep getting bigger guns, they keep getting bigger guns. Pretty soon, every teacher will be required to have an Uzi - will we be safe then?
It's not the same thing at all. An elementary school is not the same thing as a court house.
I know I'm wasting my breath on this - people either see eye to eye on this or they don't. I'm just so upset by the shootings and I can't help thinking about those children. And I can't help thinking about how much better the world would be if every lunatic who wanted one couldn't get his hands on a gun. And I can't help thinking that I really wouldn't miss guns at all if they never existed in the first place. Such a sad state of affairs.
I suggest you take a reality check then. Your utopia you seek isn't there.
Folks are now acting like the US is a war zone. Simple fact is many schools have officers on duty. Mine does at the jr and sr high. I don't see children running around scared all day long from the police. It doesn't create any type of prison type environment. Hell most of the time they are sitting around playing computer games and eating donuts or reading the newspaper. Not exactly the most exciting duty telling kids to get to class or searching a locker fro a little refer once in a while. Folks want something to feel safe so that is one solution on the table. Folks think banning assult rifles again will make them safe too. It has proven to not do anything yet the clamour for that again. Nobody is using common sense or actual data to support banning anything it's all just throw it against the wall and see if it sticks. The "mob" of course will support anything as it will make them feel good which is all they need to keep them happy anymore in this country full of idiots.
They are called public schools aren't they. It is mandatory that parents put their children in them,
unless they home school. Is not that the law? So, parents should leave their children in a
place that has no functional security in place?
You could hire veterans from
Iraq and Afghanistan to protect our schools. Even active duty military, as far as I'm
concerned. They already protect civilians over there, why not here?
Unfortunately there are a high percentage of veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. Is that really who you want protecting kids?

It's still just one individual, one armed guard. That doesn't mean a shooter can't break in somewhere in the school and still wreak havoc --- before the armed guard even gets close to them.

Well we had unarmed school marms protecting kids in Connecticut. Look how well that worked. Time to try something new. In inner city schools, there are already armed guards at the door. Works well. Time to institute on up to your suburban schools.
I guess to be really safe we better go through the lives of every teacher to make sure they aren't a candidate for the new mentally ill database. Liberals aren't careful they will end the school system because the only way to make it safe is to not allow anyone to teach. They may just go crazy and shoot all the kiddies ya know.

well we wouldn't need armed guards if there weren't all these guns in circulation. So to be pay for services like that it should be based on taxation of gun owners.
Can you believe this goofball making a statement for the NRA today. His take on things is that it's the violent games, movies and TV shows that are the cause of the violence. Because of this fact he wants everyone armed to the teeth to protect themselves. I should have known this lobby with the only purpose for existence is to fuel gunsales and make money for corporate America would not have a single sane or reasonable thing to say.

That's just it. It's impossible to predict when any one person is suddenly going to snap. Putting more guns into the hands of more people is just going to increase the likelihood that when someone does snap they have access to a gun.

I'm not saying they could. We are talking about schools though and how to make them safer. Having an armed officer and having the public know that they are there could cause some nut job to go find an easier target of opportunity in some other gun free zone. Or they could at least put up a fight against a nutjob who does show up. Nothing is perfect.
