The notion that armed guards are going to prevent school shootings is nonsense. Do you have any idea how big high schools are these days? Some have thousands of students.. How many guards are you going to have? One in every classroom.
And that is just schools. How about the malls, the workplaces, the theaters, the county fairs, or just plain taking the dog for a walk down the street? The only solution here is banning guns, all guns, absolutely. That is not going to happen so we must all get used to the notion that when the kids go out the door for school, when the wife goes to the mall, when Dad takes Fido out for a walk, we may never see them again. God bless America where we have rights and live free!
I've just emailed my State Senator and Representative as well as U.S. Rep to suggest the same. Using the school's cafeteria as a coffee shop for Police Officers on break. A steady stream of cops in and around schools should enhance their protection. They don't have to be authoritative, just present.

I guess they will just have to start with a mentally ill database that everybody is placed in then you will have to prove you are not mentally ill to get off it. That sounds like what many want.
If there was a registry of the mentally ill, and if Nancy Lanza was mentally ill, then would not that take care of it?
I'm not saying Nancy Lanza was mentally il as defined by usual diagnoses. She was a gun nut --- she was buying assault weapons and teaching her children how to shoot them.
Maybe we do need a new classification: Weapons Accrual Hysteria....WAH?

If folks know there is an armed guard then it could make them think twice and choose another location as a target of opportunity in another gun free zone. This is about the children isnt' it? Or is it about just banning guns?
Problem is it's very difficult to predict that kind of thing. Adam Lanza would probably not have been on any registry for being at risk of violence being a shy, introverted, socially awkward kid with Asperger's with no history of violence. (unless there are incidences we don't know about it)
True, but that's where having the armed police at a school will help. Keeping the truly insane on the NICS records will help as well.
I'll wait until we know for sure about Lanza before saying anything on him and violence. Given the reports of his mother wanting to institutionalize him there may have been something and his mother waited too long to get him help.

Move to Mexico where almost all guns are banned. See how safe you feel walking around. On the other hand you could move to Canada or anywhere else that dosent have the evil "guns" you so dread.
Regardless of what side of the debate you're on, the behaviour of those "protesters" was obnoxious to the core. Here you have a man trying to give a mature speech and suggestions on what to do and these self absorbed ass-holes try to distract from it. Whenever either side of a debate behaves like that, it serves nothing but to shoot themselves in the foot. Hats off to Lapierre for not taking the bait and commenting on their behaviour. Or, for that matter, answering the reporters when they clearly said no questions at this time.

The whole idea of a mental illness database is impossible to carry out as well as being an infringement of privacy. Mental health and mental illness are along a continuum. Most mental illnesses do not predispose one to violence. Mental illnesses can come and go. You can actually be cured. What are we going to do --- put all the depressed housewives in the U.S. on a registry?
