I seriously can't believe there is a sensible & ethical argument against diversifying through investment in education. It's astonishing that some people [mostly neo-cons as usual] would be against leveling the playing filed through mentorship, encouragement and investment. Anyone identified as attempting to help minorities are vilified by those who are against supporting anything they consider different... Simply disgusting...
"through mentorship and encouragement"
Double speak for parenting....fix the fundamental family issues. Nobody should be picking up the slack for deadbeat dads...except the mother of course. And how well has that done for many?
Didn't you see the other thread? "Most qualified" is code word for "most white". And "incompetent" is code for "black". It's racist to require people to be qualified for their jobs.
To my mind, the affirmative action aspects of this isn't the important thing though. It's the waste of money at a time when we are desperately trying to fix the country's finances. While I admittedly don't support affirmative action at all, I see this as something that even people who do support it should be outraged at because the nation is trillions in debt. Spending on social issues of fairness is something you do when you aren't borrowing money from China. We can't eliminate food stamps or unemployment benefits in a time of financial crisis. We can't leave people to starve. But we can sure as heck cut spending on social engineering until we actually have money to spend. Borrowing money to spend it on affirmative action programs is crazy. You want to diversity the medical field, that's fine, but do it when the economy is stable.

So we need to spend $500 million on supporting and encouraging the urban ghetto culture of baby mommas and daddies?
Anyone who had an easier ride because of their race..........nope, so sorry!
Your ignorance at medical training is ridiculous.
First there's the MCAT. Multiple choice- so maybe you argue that AA gets colored folks a break, ok.
Now med school- grueling 4 years- still lets say AA gives colored folks a break.
USMLE steps I, II, III- pass/fail. That's it. Either you know it or you don't. If you don't pass any step- you do not pass go.
Board Exams or Board Certification - a combination of a written test and for some an oral exam- at this point- you've had 4 years under grad, 4 years of med school and 3-7 years of residency. That's a long time to be riding the affirmative action express.
No one gets it easy in medical school. Only folks that didn't get in think that.

probably anyone looking to join the medical field is a stand-up guy/girl trying to better themselves and likely has avoided the pitfalls of many that lead to the oft quoted and stereotyped images of blacks/latinos...

Talk about disgusting.
Did you read the link? If you did you would realize that they were discussing qualified professionals/students. Nothing about deadbeat dads was mentioned. It's asinine to make such comparisons for the purpose of this topic...

If you were intelligent enough to understand....once you are declared a "professional", a field should only be required to hire based off capacity/ability....
Not to "encourage" or "mentor" in the name of "diversity"...."encouraging" and "mentoring" are WHAT DADDIES AND MOMMIES DO.
