He should've known the law...You break it, you go to jail. If you're not going to respect the country you're going into enough to research their laws especially gun laws than oh well...
Oh dear God....like OMG!
It was a bolt action .410 scatter gun for Christs sake.
If he hadn`t been locked up in a Mexican jail he would have been locked up in a Guatemalan jail or a Costa Rican jail.He was not going to get that gun into Costa Rica. No way,no how.

He should have shoved it up their ass!
Semper Fi~
A) It was illegal. He deserves to be in jail.
B) Aren't you just the armchair warrior. You're the type of alleged vet who makes us think all military are whackos.
Why not, you ask? Because if you're packing heat when traveling, then your destination and reasons for traveling regardless of how well your intentions, doesn't absolve you of your duty to obey the law in the eyes of authorities - that's why not. It doesn't matter to Mexican cops, it doesn't matter to NYC cops, probably many other cops, and suffice to say it doesn't matter to helluva lot of other people charged with upholding the laws of their land. I'm not saying that I always like it, but it's almost never a good idea to take weapons across borders of any kind. Just don't do it. It doesn't make you look good.
Silly little lefty trogs. They'd be in a huge snit over Mr. Hammar being imprisoned for 6 months had they and their little useless eater Jay Carney even known about the story. So predictable.
the lesson here is do not trust our border agents who have him the papers to travel with an antique gun. If your are conservative and trust anything the government says when you know they will lie to you and leave you chained.

then why did our government say it was legal and gave him papers to carry it

It doesn't matter what our government says, it is up to you to find out via the country that you are traveling to, its laws concerning weapons. Do some research and you will find out that it is ILLEGAL to bring any weapon into Mexico no matter what a border agent tells you.
I vote the next time we catch one of those illegal alien MFs here...we chain them to a bed, beat them, extort (or attempt to) every penny their family has....and death threats to boot.

No...the VETs er (lack luster ones at least) that thinks he deserved that for a old bolt action shotgun are the whackos.

No it's not. Unregistered weapons are illegal. The processes is long and complicated but can be done.
This Marine decided to take a short cut and got caught up in Mexico's Napoleonic legal process.
