We should contrast this list with the amount of taxes these states pay vs the amount of government money and services they receive per dollar.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

Don't worry, when they don't pay their student loans back, the government takes 15% off their entitlements and adds hefty fees for the privilege.

Net result, if they have any reported (by others) income, the government is probably making money off of those student loans.

It's the opposite. I've already mentioned this.

The states that are run well according to this list encourage economic activity, don't punish achievment by taxing the engines of commerce, and enact fically sound policy that ensures that enough money is available for essentials.

Notice that the top two best run states are enegy producing states - and that energy isn't neccesarily all "green energy". Meanwhile the worst run state - California - recently enacted carbon cap and trade legislation.

The Midwest seems to have some good common sense - outside of Illinois.
All I can say is that it is easy to lead a state that is booming -- a state that was not easy to live in before air conditioning, before the federal government created dams to bring in freshwater, before the federal government built highways. The northern, bluer states do have more corruption, but they also have natural resources which pre-dated the need for federal intervention, toll roads that pre-dated federal funding, and climates that are uglier but more livable before air conditioning.

It is more complicated than the OP makes it seem, and once the freshwater dries up down south and air conditioning gets more expensive I do expect a reversal of the Sunbelt prosperity.

That would only provide misleading information.

For example, the federal government owns 225,848,164 acres of Alaska, or 61.8%. That includes 1,686,371 acres owned by the DOD, divided among 15 military bases, but does not include NOAA or the FAA who are based on State owned lands.

The amount of federal money spent on each State includes all the federal lands, military bases, programs and personnel. Northeastern States, for example, do not have BLM lands, or very many military bases, or an overly large presence of the federal government in their States, which explains why they get so little from the federal government.

Glitch lives there. Go to the Alaska forum and you will learn that many other CD membrs live in that state as well.

Population does not translate into "ease" of administration - witness Detroit.

I can easily say that without the illegal immigrants, Arizona would be at the top of this list - rather than at the bottom.

At least that state is doing something to solve their problem, despite liberal obstructionists.

Indeed. Plus you must look at the creation of money. Banks create money and extract an inflation tax on the rest of the country. People like to say the city of London 'subsidizes the rest of the UK' whereas in fact, the opposite is true. The rest of the country subsizides London. Tax/Spend is just one small part of whether a region is self sufficient or not.

Those states do have a lot of liberals, which explains why so many people from those states advocate for the confiscation at gunpoint of other people's money.

The top 5 states on the list in the OP's article are ALL welfare states but only 2 of them have significant amounts of Federal Land.

The worst 5 states on the list are ALL productive states that support the welfare states.

Last I checked, New Jersey was a state with high levels of welfare, and it is in the top 5 of the worst run states.

At least the rest of the state south of Northern New Jersey had the sense to elect Chris Christie as your governor. Their is some hope for N.J.

The Jets should make Tim Tebow happy - his Christian influence, and mobility in the pocket, can only help the "Garden State".
