No surprise from this report from me - conservative Californians have known that we live in the worst run state for some time. It is only the loony left whom pretends that their disastrous polices of tax and spend, anti-business regulation, and pandering to special interest groups like unions and illegal immigrants is a "good thing". This state is entirely controlled by Democrats - and the results are predictable - #1 on the worst run states list.
The states that are run well according to this list encourage economic activity, don't punish achievment by taxing the engines of commerce, and enact fically sound policy that ensures that enough money is available for essentials.

Notice that the top two best run states are enegy producing states - and that energy isn't neccesarily all "green energy". Meanwhile the worst run state - California - recently enacted carbon cap and trade legislation.
The Midwest seems to have some good common sense - outside of Illinois.
And Merry Christmas to all you nay-sayers on both sides of the great divide from those of us balanced and smart/free-thinking enough to be in the middle.
The causal correlation appears to actually be that states with low populations and few cities are better run than those with high populations and large cities.
And that's primarily because they're easier to run.

South carolina vs California on any level? Care to venture who wins op?

Precisely.
I have asked before if right-wingers had ever considered the strong possibility that their conception of "freedom" - less government, less regulations, etc. - runs in inverse proportion to the population of a country. Very few responses to that as they typically reject any arguments that put forward the idea that there are too many people on Earth or in the United States.

And here come the boatload of excuses.
If the correlation between difficulty and efficiency were related, then NYC city would be much worse than Detroit.

If the competition is for what state of those two is worse run - California wins.
I agree that South Carolina would be better than California on most everything else - provided that we are dealing with human made artifacts and institutions.
California wins for natural beauty in most head to head comparisons. Too bad liberals drive people away so that they can't enjoy it.
California is at the top of the list for the same reason that Arizona is near the top of the list.
CA Much of California’s fiscal woes involve the economic downturn. Home prices plunged by 33.6% between 2006 and 2011, worse than all states except for three.
AZ Between 2006 and 2011, the value of homes in Arizona tumbled by 35%, more than every state except for Nevada.
