There is a reason cops seldom do better than 1 hit in 5 while under fire. So your fictional teacher charges and is shot down like a dog. The shooter can now kill everyone.
It is a waste of money and insane.
Well...if he has to "rack a round" before he brings the weapon to bear...he has no business carrying in the first place. No shooter with a defensive handgun that knows anything carries a weapon without one in the pipe, that's more Hollywood stupidity. As far as "clicking the safety", I've shot many thousands of rounds at game, at targets and at skeets, never once had an issue with remembering to "click the safety". However, in the case of defensive handguns, these days that's much less of an issue, many (most?) defensive handguns don't have safetys. They are extremely rare on revolvers, have been for 150 years or so. They aren't on any Glocks (in the conventional sense), on Springfield's XD series, nor on many M&Ps or other striker fired or DAO semis. Double action and double/single semi-autos are designed to be carried without the safety in use as well. About the only ones that really should be carried with the safety on are single action autos (1911s).

Allowing a teacher to carry...gives them a chance, no more, no less. Wouldn't it be better if that teacher in Conn that hid her students in the cupboards before pleading for her life prior to being slaughtered...had had some chance to even the odds and stop a madman? Rater than merely pleading with a madman to spare her life. Doesn't she, or anyone else, deserve that chance, should such a circumstance occur? I just can't understand the mentality of ensuring that victims are defenseless.

Yes you did. On the news tonight, many of the teachers already own their pistols who are taking the classes. Also as I said before, many school booster fundraisers across Utah would be a way for people to donate money to buy a gun for them (who do not own) to use to protect students. Not one teacher has been reported of asking to be paid for training time. These are volunteers.

One teacher said this:

“Kasey Hansen, a special education teacher from Salt Lake City, Utah, says she would take a bullet for any of her students, but if faced with a gunman threatening her class, she would rather be able to shoot back.â€

Voluntary basis with 2 weeks at Front Sight for a starter. Those that don’t wish to participate can get advanced life support training.

As I have already asked someone else on here who answered my question, I will ask you, how many school shootings have happened in Utah to cause them to be so worried about school shootings? I am guessing if you compare data before this and after this, there will be little change unless the guns the teachers could be bringing to schools could get into the hands of a child that could cause damage either on accident or on purpose. Doesn't seem like the best solution when they have no issue with school violence or school shootings to begin with.

looks like more and more people are listening to the NRA and not obama when it comes to school safety.

What is wrong with you???

Unreliable, haphazard way ....How will ALL students be "protected" equally?

Rabid Teacher Hating Republicans Take Note.

Volunteers are fine but if Rabid Righties pass laws that teachers must carry guns then there are no "volunteers".
And what about teachers who DO think they should be paid for the extra time and training???

But please note, Republicans, especially in Wisconsin and Michigan refer to teachers as "greedy Union Thugs"...

I hope you righties note that there ARE volunteer teachers who will go out of their way to protect kids, who will give FREE time and their own resources to their schools(and ALWAYS HAVE)

NOW, how big a RAISE will these teachers be given for improving their skills and becoming guards ?

And WHO will pay for it....VOLUNTEERS ???? I bet there won't be any VOLUNTEERS on that side of the equation....

Why would you expect them to be willing to pay for this "freebie" any more than this group has expressed a desire to pay into Obamacare to cover someone who cannot afford health care? Sheesh get real here. "They" reserve the right to determine which items supposedly provided as free fall under the marker of being those of a socialistic Nanny State.

Free guns, free training? We're just a heartbeat away from a whole new business enterprise starting up designing tot sized body armor and then a subsequent government program to make sure the stuff is provided "free" to all students, teachers Principals and all administrative staff anywhere on school property.

Teacher's unions all gonna forego this opportunity claiming danger pay should be added to their pay structure dependant upon the FACT they're now required to walk around their school "strapped" and how close to the front entrance their classroom is?
They gonna leave their little bang-bangs behind when they go to the cafeteria for lunch?
Phys-ed teachers gonna wear the holster and gun while they're demonstrating the parallel bars are they?
Football coaches going to carry them during practice?
You gonna post snipers at every corner of the quad while outdoor activities are going on?
SCHOOL BUS driver's going to get all that backgound check before you clamp a pump shotgun to the dashboard?

You idiots move in this direction you're going down a road leading to even greater stupidity in the future.

What a fugged up country full of moral misfits!

You are correct. It was one man's proposal going nowhere, fast.
