When milk prices go up, the poor start giving their kids pop and Kool-aid. If you think that's a good thing, then yes.
Doubling the price of milk won't change how much milk we drink. It will just leave us less disposable income to spend. We pay for this one way or the other. Pick your poison.
The poor get food stamps and get the milk free.
It is the working people with children that will feel the increase and the farmers will have a sure cut back as consumption decreases for many people. A paycheck only stretches so far. With high gas prices, food prices and more taxes added to the working people it will be a struggle to make ends meet.
Do you feel the same about gasoline prices, whose production is subsidized because oil companies drill on federal lands and get preferential tax treatment?
And the same oil companies do not build new refineries because it would increase their costs and the supply which would reduce the price of gas and impact their bottom line.

i think the oil companies would build better refineries if government would allow them to. also it is a real crock that government both state and feds get more in taxes than the oil companies get in profit.

I do. I think gas is too cheap relative to the value it provides. Let the poor people ride BART and leave the freeways for those of us who can pay the toll.
We could cut milk consumption in half in this country and still be drinking too much.
Cut the demand and prices will drop like a lead balloon.
Milk is not good for human consumption - yet so many of us take pills to get over lactose intolerance and allergies. I would be much more upset if the cost of veggies was going up, but dairy is completely unnecessary for human consumption. Even with low calcium levels due to the meds I take, I'm perfectly fine getting by with lots of kale, spinach, collard greens, fortified oatmeal and a supplement.
The milk industry has spent years enforcing the belief that the only form of calcium comes from dairy products. It helps encourage faux outrage during milk price hikes like now.

Your right, it will be the working middle class with children, feeling this pinch. No matter how one budgets for food, coupons and all, only goes so far.
Food is going sky high in some areas and some markets and speciality markets. It will be a struggle to make ends meet, no matter what anyone says.
And yes those on food stamps will still get their milk.
Got a feeling, this is only the beginning of many negative things to pass.

^^This.
Enough with the subsidies, and I mean all of them. Let's just see what the market will bear, shall we?
