Study: Some Eco-Friendly Light Bulbs May Put Health At Risk

Money saving, compact fluorescent light bulbs emit high levels of ultra violet radiation, according to a new study. Research at Long Island’s Stony Brook found that the bulbs emit rays so strong that they can actually burn skin and skin cells.

“The results were that you could actually initiate cell death,” said Marcia Simon, a Professor of Dermatology.

Exposure to the bulbs could lead to premature aging and skin cancer, according to doctors.

“It can also cause skin cancer in the deadliest for, and that’s melanoma,” said Dr. Rebecca Tung.

...
Stony Brook researches advised that customers exercise caution and stay two feet away from the bulbs at all times, while storing them in an overhead fixture or lamp.

From the study...

“Our study revealed that the response of healthy skin cells to UV emitted from CFL bulbs is consistent with damage from ultraviolet radiation,” said Professor Rafailovich. “Skin cell damage was further enhanced when low dosages of TiO2 nanoparticles were introduced to the skin cells prior to exposure.” Rafailovich added that incandescent light of the same intensity had no effect on healthy skin cells, with or without the presence of TiO2.

We can't allow these bulbs to stay on the market. They are more of a risk than whatever extra energy we use for the incandescents. What's left... halogens, LEDs?

Very scary.
I will continue to stock up on incandescent bulbs.

You can blame Al Gore for this one also.

I know that science is as foreign a language as Martian to Republicans and conservatives but...

Dr. Tatsiana Mironava, co-author of the study, told Media Matters that "there is no link in scientific literature between CFL exposure and cancer." And dermatologist Dr. Howard Brooks explained that CFLs emit "such a small amount" of UV rays that they "shouldn't be a risk." Dr. Brooks said that skin damage would only be a concern after "prolonged exposure," such as sitting directly underneath a desk lamp for an extended period of time.
In general, the probability that artificial lighting for visibility purposes induces any acute pathologic conditions is low, since the levels of maximum exposure are normally much lower than those where such effects are known to occur in healthy people and certainly much lower than in typical summer daylight.

the effect of CFLs at distances of 2.5, 7.5 and 35 centimeters (0.98 to 13.78 inches) away from skin cells and found that "the response of healthy skin cells to UV emitted from CFL bulbs is consistent with damage from ultraviolet radiation."

Ultraviolet radiation, that's the stuff that comes from sunlight.

they didn't say it was ultraviolet radiation. They said damage was CONSISTENT with that type of damage.

I am glad I have alot of non expensive, non environment whacko friendly, old fashioned evil bulbs stocked up.

Out of curiosity, why would you be stocking up on something that isn't going away?

As I mentioned earlier, science is a foreign language to conservatives.

Since you didn't read the report of the abstract... oh that is too much to expect.

If the culprit isn't ultra violet light what exactly do you think radiation do you suppose CFL bulbs emit.

Never mind

Abstract
Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs can provide the same amount of lumens as incandescent light bulbs, using one quarter of the energy. Recently, CFL exposure was found to exacerbate existing skin conditions; however, the effects of CFL exposure on healthy skin tissue have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we studied the effects of exposure to CFL illumination on healthy human skin tissue cells (fibroblasts and keratinocytes). Cells exposed to CFLs exhibited a decrease in the proliferation rate, a significant increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, and a decrease in their ability to contract collagen. Measurements of UV emissions from these bulbs found significant levels of UVC and UVA (mercury [Hg] emission lines), which appeared to originate from cracks in the phosphor coatings, present in all bulbs studied. The response of the cells to the CFLs was consistent with damage from UV radiation, which was further enhanced when low dosages of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), normally used for UV absorption, were added prior to exposure. No effect on cells, with or without TiO2 NPs, was observed when they were exposed to incandescent light of the same intensity.

Yes considering the fact that incandescent bulbs were't outlawed but rather the energy levels of any bulb or that you can purchase LED or Halogen bulbs that meet the new standards without having to purchase CFL's.

Um, they still have the ability to do damage and cause cancer and that is the point. You don't have to sit out in the sun to get skin cancer. Ever hear of tanning salons, which we all know are huge cancer risks.

the bottom line is they can cause damage similar to UV radiation and lead to skin cancer. I'll pass on these bulbs and use incandescent.

Oh thank you wise government for making my lighting choices for me!

Im sure the same crack team of experts that certified the scanners our beloved TSA uses, checked these bulbs extensively
