They bore me to tears.

I was a Marine. That's why jocks bore me. I'm a outdoorsy, fish, shoot, auto racing, MMA UFC, guitar playing kind of guy. I bore VERY easliy. Even in this thread. It needed some color and excitement.

same applies to movie stars, singers and TV celebs

good one...I'd salary cap the whole movie star, sports thing @ no more then 1million per year. All proceeds to be directed toward the individual's choice in say three only well scrutinized charity efforts....new ones though....for example....pay for a dentist to work the week for people with crumby wages..painting broken down homes elders are living in and have no money....new idea's though....If they don't like it too bad...the people are the boss and Ive already lost interest in most of it anyway, most players are not on a team, but bargaining and playing for themselves. Movies seem pretty useless, I watch the old ones. 1 million...if thats not enough too bad.

isn't it true that MLS (major league soccer) actually DOES have a salary cap?

around the 65k/year mark (it certainly used to I'm sure)

Now isn't that socialism and how come it is allowed?

whatever happened to the free market in this case.

someone mentioned musicians - they are a different kettle of fish because they tend to only sell cd's etc, so no need to buy.

AND they actually have an acquired talent - people like Jimi Hendrix should be allowed more leeway due to their contribution to rock and roll

but as for people like Madonna and Gaga, well we could do without these sort of folk anyway, lol

I'd argue that the truly big stars are underpaid. They generate untold millions, possibly billions, for their employers. Michael Jordan basically made Nike. Sorry if this bothers you.

so what, I have no interest in owning a pair of Nike shoes, so why should I contribute to his salary?

It's allowed because the teams are part of a league and the league puts a cap on salaries, to maintain parity amongst teams. The NFL and NBA also have salary caps. The government does not regulate this. This is an agreement that was worked out between the owners and the players.

You either generate money, or you don't. Talent level doesn't have anything to do with it. You may not like Lady Gaga (I sure as hell don't), but if millions adore her, and are willing to shell out money for her music, or to see her perform, and she rakes in millions for everyone who has a stake in her, then she should be paid accordingly. Complaining about it wreaks of sour grapes.
