As many people are calling for arming teachers as a response to school shootings one of the arguments I keep hearing from people opposed to the idea is that teachers will flat out reject this idea. The opponents of the idea say that teachers would never want to carry concealed weapons in school.
Well, in Texas at least, that is apparently, completely untrue.
A gun range in Texas offered a free handgun training course to teachers and school administrators. There were 400 slots available and all spots were booked in less than 24 hours and a waiting list is quickly filling up.
The course was a 10 hour course and covered basic gun safety, marksmanship and how to handle a self defense situation.
Some school districts in Texas already allow teachers with a valid concealed carry permit to carry their weapons while they teach.
Governor Rick Perry hopes the number of teachers carrying to school increases and
has voiced his support for such a policy.
“I feel the need to be proactive, I’m entrusted to the care and safety of over 100 students. I want to be prepared, if and when things go that way,” said middle school teacher Kim Williams, who attended the course.
At least in Texas it’s clear that teachers are taking responsibility for their own safety as well as that of their students.
