Teams want the best person for the job. Race is not part of the equation. If a person can win games or assist in the winning of games then they get the job. USC, BYU, and a few other College level teams offer scholarships to guys from Samoa and Tonga not because they are Islanders but because they are big guys. Those big guys are an advantage to the Football programs of those schools. Many of those guys go on to play in the NFL.

Perhaps it is possible they choose sports as a way of making it in the world because frequently other doors are closed to them.

So being poor somehow makes you a good athlete? Or gives you more advantages than having resources? Yawn....pathetic misdirection.

Thanks for playing into racism, when we have quota based hiring on nothing more than being a specific race/gender to get preferred treatment over a majority candidate (and potentially superior skilled).

You brought as much to this discussion as a vegetable.

So??? -- Sport, perhaps more than any other cultural venue, serves as a demonstration of the opportunity for the demonstration of and benefit from, individual talent. If African-Americans and other minority groups don't appear to be making as much progress in other venues, it's more likely because the media see little profit in focusing attention on the academic world

But consider, for the moment, the flowering of "variant" markets such as women's basketball, the emergence of "extreme" sport among the young, the disporportionate effect of the Caribbean "baseball academoes", and the fast-growing American market for soccer.

And conversely, the doping scandals fueled by the attempt to "challenge" the natural limits of human physiology, or what appears to be an attack on high school and college football by the Politically Correct, or miscarriages of justice like the Duke lacrosse fiasco of a few years ago.

Point being, changes within the world of sport are a process directed primarily by the human condition itself. The more often Big Brother/Sister is invited to the process, the more distorted the picture beomes.

I don't think it's racism and this assertion may be a factor but not the only factor. For example the NHL is dominated by white men not because of race but because they have been ice skating for 6 months a year in the pond in their back yard since they could walk. There isn't a very large amount of the black population growing up in that environment.

Exactly, which is why the population in NHL hockey is much closer to the general population. It makes sense that where hockey is life (Canada) the numbers player out close the general population.

According to the 2001 Census, 662,200 people identified themselves as Black, representing just over 2% of Canada’s total population and 17% of the visible minority population.

There is huge amount of NHL players from northern European countries too.

What a biased comment to make. Your post makes it seem as if all black people are good with sports. I usually don't disclose my race, but I will. I'm am an African American and I did not and do not excel with sports. Those who are blessed with that talent, don't have to remain living the life that they do. The rest of us normal working class folks do. Furthermore, what is your meaning of ghetto?

The NBA and NFL are over-represented by African Americans because the pool of elite football players and basketball players they choose from is dominated by African Americans. It's that simple. The coaches, the general managers, the scouts, etc. are not choosing blacks over whites of equal playing skill.

So true!! In addition, the owners and media are making billions from their performances. Thus the factual reason is it's all about winning and the money!! NFL & NBA will recruit anyone regardless of color if they feel they will gain wins.

I would not say racist, but sports do have a differing burden of proof in regards to employment than other businesses. If a standard business had the numbers a NBA team had; the business would have to fight constantly to defend their hiring practices and prove every job qualification is a necessity.

If a company's hiring creates impact against a protected group, the company must show the cause for the impact is a business necessity. So while Company A may have to spend money to fight off a lawsuit involving a 75lbs lifting requirement for box handlers; an NFL team is basically immune to show why their standards are a business necessity though they create impact.
