I'm glad they're doing this search. Because they're finding out that the right wing attempt to link Hitler with gun control turns out to be another gun-nut hallucination.
In 1938, under Nazi rule, gun laws became significantly more relaxed. Rifle and shotgun possession were deregulated and gun access for hunters, Nazi Party members, and government officials was expanded. The legal age to own a gun was lowered. Jews, however, were prohibited from owning firearms and other dangerous weapons.
Unfortunately for those who would like to link Hitler and the National Socialists with gun control, the entire premise for such an effort is false. German firearms legislation under Hitler, far from banning private ownership, actually facilitated the keeping and bearing of arms by German citizens by eliminating or ameliorating restrictive laws which had been enacted by the government preceding his: a left-center government which had contained a number of Jews.
The 1938 law signed by Hitler that LaPierre mentions in his book basically does the opposite of what he says it did. “The 1938 revisions completely deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles and shotguns, as well as ammunition,” Betancourt wrote. Meanwhile, many more categories of people, including Nazi party members, were exempted from gun ownership regulations altogether, while the legal age of purchase was lowered from 20 to 18, and permit lengths were extended from one year to three years.
Well it is good that people are searching and educating themselves and learning that Conservative Hyperbole is just that, fake outrage to connect false historical connections.
What they`re finding is that Hitler issued every able bodied male a firearm and a snappy looking uniform to wear.
...And most of them didn't come back from Russia or France, while those lucky few who did came back to bombed out ruins.

I don't know, depends on what the context of racism is. Obviously racism is real, but I am sure there are fake racism outrage as well.
But in this case, Hitler didn't come for Germany's guns, instead he gave every non-Jew a gun and told them where to point it. If this country ever gets a Hitler he will come from the far-right trying to eradicate a type of person in our country....my guess it would be Muslims and Mexicans, with some nice quarantining of the Blacks just to be safe.

IF this country were to ever succumb to Hitler-like evil, it would be after an incredible economic downturn, a downturn which would make this recession look like child's play.
It would have to be a dramatic decrease in our standard of living leaving Americans desperate for a solution, so desperate that they could rally around something so oppressive and evil, but I suppose there is an outside chance it could happen, even if recent history should have warned us of such a thing.
But I think it's a pretty bigoted thing to say that it would come from conservatives. If you really feel that way, apply for citizenship abroad. That is about as tin-foil hat nutjob crap as I've heard in a long time.
