Why are most Latin American countries Marxist-left leaning banana republics? (radical, death)

They have NO army, just a national Police force. A higher rate of literacy than the USA, and No history of revolution and or civil war. The USA should be taking it's cues from this polite and safe democracy.
They encourage American and Canadian seniors to live there, and having an annual guranteed income of $14,000 is enough to live comfortably, AND qualify for their national health care system. Rents are based on the "local income levels " and a nice two bedroom apt, with modern appliances rents for 300 dollars a month. The capital city has English language radio and newspapers, and a thriving "anglo " community.
The original poster is so far wrong that he isn't even in the ball park. But of course he isn't going to listen to a Canadian........what would we know ?

Hey Jim, you make Costa Rica sound like Paradise on Earth. Seriously, if things are so great over there, what are you still doing in Toronto? I am sure there are millions of immigrants and refugees all over the world like yourself who can't wait to immigrate to Costa Rica.

whats it to you if they choose to elect marxists as you call them
As much as I love Costa Rica, have part time lived there for 10 years until a couple of years ago. I can tell you that 14,000 isn't going to get you very far unless you like rice and beans with a token sliver of burnt meat, and to live in one of those "nice" 300 dollar places it will be perhaps a 300 sq ft apt/house with 1 or 2 tiny bedrooms just big enough for a bed, one bathroom, no AC, and possible flooding when it rains----DAILY.
Didn't they have an uprising/civil war in the 40's which is why the military was abolished in the 48 constitution and isn't there a treaty in which the US would protect them? As for hospitals, well, lets just say that me and any of the gringos I know planned to get on a plane no matter what if anything required hospitalization. Too many horror stories. You know, you get what you pay for!
Don't get me wrong, I love the place but it's not the cheap to live, can do no wrong utopia people seem to believe it is upon spending a vacation there. Rice and beans and electrical outages get old pretty quick.

Fine, Marlin... Costa Rica has it's deficits. But it would hardly be a Marxist's dream and is certainly no banana republic.
I understand it's no Marxist's dream. many have their own businesses there. Of the places I have been in Latin America, Venezuela is the only place that is noticeably leftist govern'd. I say governed because the people are just like anywhere. They want to be successful and many would like to have their own business. Of course everyone I have been in contact with can't stand Chaves. He appeals to the uneducated poor. Personally I see him going the way of Castro by slowly nationalizing everything. Hopefully he is in the past now. The country itself is beautiful and the people I have met have been great.
In about 18 years tooling around the INTERNET on political, social, historical forums etc I have noticed an inordinate number of my fellow countrymen cannot seem to put three complete sentences together without insulting someone else's country, ethnicity, race or what have you. Why is that? I have been on forums where the majority of posters are not Americans and they don't stoop to that kind of debate as often as we do. Sure there are people who are critics of the US but too often we take it to the extreme. On those "Why are Americans disliked?" the OP is most often an American himself. Provoke someone and you'll probably get an unpleasent response.
That said, Irish Bob makes a a valid point; if some of these nations have a left or right leaning government it is because that is what their people feel in necessay at the moment and they have freely elected that government, with the exception of the military dictatorships that are fewer every day. Other Americans have waited 200 years to exercise their right to free elections so who are we to tell them what kind of government they should have and especially if we don't and never have lived in that country.
The socialist thing too is getting old. Castro proved it doesn't work very well on its own and Chavez has shown that it can lead right back to the old forms of right wing military control. However some socialist ideas and tactics can be a great help to jump start a country which is doing poorly. Brazil's Lula combine some agarian socialist measures with modern corporatism and used it to make Brazil a better place. You use what you have when you need it.
I lived seven years under the Franco regime in Spain. The OP should be reminded that even if he is to the right, if he published some of his comments here under a Franco, a Peron, a Pinochet etc he might well find himself facing jail time or worse. People like that don't care what you think they just don't want you to make waves. If you do you may pay a heavy price.
if you don't like Fernández de Kirchner wait until you meet Julia Gillard of Australia. Fernandez is a ***** cat next to her. She's like "Welcome to Australia, follow our laws and customs or get out ." And at the same time keep an eye on the ROK's Park Geun-hye. She's going to make some noise too. Like it or not the playing field is being leveled and at very fast rate. The days that we can tell evryone what to do are sliding into the past and the more we mess up the faster the pace.
To the OP, just remember that the US government supported Castro when he first came to power. The US government then abandoned exiled Cubans who were trying to oust him. The US has ruined so many Latin America countries, it's a shame that they are so hypocritical.

I used to live in Costa Rica. You may be joking, but with its natural beauty, friendly people, and stable government and economy, it actually does have a TON of expatriates from all over the Americas, Europe, Asia, and even Africa. Costa Rica being hands down the most politically and economically stable country in Central America as well as one of the safest, cleanest, and most educated countries in all of Latin America, they particularly get a lot of people from other sketchier, less stable parts of Latin America like Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, or even other Central American countries, who go there to live a better life rather than risking having to face the danger and uncertainty, language barriers, and complete cultural shock of immigrating all the way to the U.S.; many Latin Americans joke that Costa Rica is the USA of Latin America.

his eccentric demagoguery aside , chavez done a lot more good than harm
prior to his arrival , the only real beneficarys were a wealthy minority elite who,s loyalty was more to places like florida
you wouldnt expect americans to vote against their own interests so why do you expect venezuelans to do the same
