The people you are describing are the ones who listen to Rush and Hannity. Their audience are the ones who can't think on their own and need to be told what to think. All you have to do is to listen to their callers. They worship these talking heads and believe what they say is gospel.

The parties have become republican = conservative and democrat = liberal to a large degree. It hasn't always been that way.

For example LBJ needed the help of the liberal Republicans to pass the Civil Rights Act. Conservative southern democrats wouldn't vote for it, and LBJ got the help of the liberal republican, that along with liberal democrats passed the bill.

Some of the conserative democrats left the demo party and became dixie democrats and some republicans. Some conservative democrats changed their spots and said they were more moderate if not liberal, remaining in the democrat party.

Then Nixon ran on the Southern Strategy, and republicans have been painted as southern conservatives since then to a large degree.

Reagan got a lot of stuff right- low inflation, 12% growth, unemployment for blacks cut in half, ended cold war with Soviet Union.

I don't believe growth was 12% but those that praise growth under Reagan cherry pick the numbers. They always start in late 1983, because prior to then the numbers were awful.

Black unemployment fell dramatically in Reagan's second term only because it rose dramatically in his first term:
