This puts the Federal Budget into perspective.

* U.S. Tax revenue: $ 2,170,000,000,000

* Fed budget: $ 3,820,000,000,000

* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000

* National debt: $14,271,000,000,000

* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget:

* Annual family income: $21,700.00

* Money the family spent: $38,200.00

* New debt to the credit card: $16,500.00

* Credit card Balance: $142,710.00

* Total budget cuts so far: $385.00

That's a little mind numbing. A household of course could not continue that very long.

It will some day correct itself and we will have to take austerity measures like Greece . Then we can fix it .

NASA spends $1 million a year on developing recipes for foods which astronauts could prepare while visiting Mars, even though the agency has no plans to go there any time soon. But just in case NASA changes its mind someday, it wants to ensure that astronauts on Mars don't experience "menu fatigue."

I recall a scene in the British comedy Yes, Minister in which a career Civil Servant schools a newly appointed Minister bent on austerity. He says that government is not like private business. In private business success is measured by profits and revenues. In government success and importance are measured by the size of budgets. Hence, the constantly growing need by government to widen its reach and need more funding.

Luckily, the government isn't run like a household.

Sounds like a family that can balance the budget by not spending at all on military spending ($8500) and Medicare/Medicaid/CHIP ($8500).

Yeah, cause technologies NASA comes up with never transfer to the private and public sector.

Unluckily, you are the co-signer on the government’s debts. The government may never need to pay the principal on those debts but they damn sure have to pay the interest, and that my friend is where your paycheck and your assets come in. In a crisis they can take your assets to pay their bills. Their constant printing is also stealing the value of that paycheck faster than your raises can make up the difference. Add that to the constant raising of taxes and what you have is the recipe for a declining standard of living.

Post-Cold War study, but pre-2001, found that technology transferred more efficiently when originally designed for private sector use than for Defense purposes.

The firm Sonalyst was the example of the piece in how they opened a computer gaming division whereas their core business was DoD submarine technology.
