NASA spends $1 million a year on developing recipes for foods which astronauts could prepare while visiting Mars, even though the agency has no plans to go there any time soon. I recall a scene in the British comedy Yes, Minister in which a career Civil Servant schools a newly appointed Minister bent on austerity. He says that government is not like private business. In private business success is measured by profits and revenues. In government success and importance are measured by the size of budgets. Hence, the constantly growing need by government to widen its reach and need more funding.

The government may never need to pay the principal on those debts but they damn sure have to pay the interest, and that my friend is where your paycheck and your assets come in. In a crisis they can take your assets to pay their bills. Their constant printing is also stealing the value of that paycheck faster than your raises can make up the difference. Add that to the constant raising of taxes and what you have is the recipe for a declining standard of living.
