LOL. The UFO aspect of this still cracks me up. Don't get me wrong, I tend to believe this planet has been visited, but they aren't going to be some super-evolved alien species with the technology to travel millions/billions of light years just to crash into a wind farm in England.
I was about to post this. I don't know if intelligent life has ever visited Earth, but I'm certain it's out there. And if they were capable of coming to Earth, I'd like to think they'd have good enough tech to not fly into a wind farm.
There was a video on YouTube (it's gone now) that showed the actual failure of that exact turbine.
The turbine was spinning much faster than it was supposed to. Probably the drive gear inside the case broke or was stripped. The blades were totally unloaded, and spun much faster than they were designed to. Then centrifugal force did the rest. The blade that flew off went flying upwards and out of the frame at about a 45 degree angle. At the speed it was going, it might be miles away. Then the turbine, unbalanced, rocked back and forth briefly and stopped.
There is another video on YouTube (google "runaway wind turbine"). It destroys not only the blades, but the pylon holding it up.
Them little grey buggers landed in my back 40 and made off with my dog. Then they brought him back and he's never been the same since.
