There is a lot more money in being a victim of racism today than was the case in the 1960s.
To ask one of the greatest profiteers of race-based shake-down lawsuits for an honest evaluation of the issues involved is just silly.
King challenged us to put-up or shut-up on our claim that all men are created equal and I support that, but implicit in his desire that we be judged on our character and not skin color is the impossibility that we will remain equal.
Removing the consequences of having poor character by adding points to test scores and setting aside government contracts based on race stands in complete opposition to King's dream of a color blind society were character matters.
Yeah, the only downside of being a "victim" of racism in the 1960s was getting killed.
King did NOT challenge us to "put-up or shut-up"....
You really, really need to at least read about MLK's life in wikipedia if nothing else. You are so far off the mark, it's embarrassing. King also advocated for a $50 billion dollar fund.....
"he said that granting black Americans only equality could not realistically close the economic gap between them and whites. King said that he did not seek a full restitution of wages lost to slavery, which he believed impossible, but proposed a government compensatory program of $50 billion over ten years to all disadvantaged groups."......not just for blacks but for all poor people.
That's like saying to understand Malcolm X, we should ask Farrakhan. Jesse Jackson's entire livelihood depends on fomenting race unrest. His became a different path after the assassination.
Why was King a staunch Republican?
Maybe he understood something the majority of African Americans do not.
What's wrong with holding King in great esteem? Isn't it ridiculous to think that you have to be of the right color, or party, to consider his aspirations righteous?
All I hear are the same blowhards using any excuse to vent their racist views. I do know if King read these forums he'd be insensed.
How do YOU know where Jesse Jackson's money comes from, did he invite you to view all his financial documents?
Nothing wrong with holding King in "great esteem"...however there is something very WRONG with trying to distort who he was and what he stood for, which is what these silly extreme right-wing Republicans are doing.
If MLK and his people would have depended on the democrat slave masters, they would still be on the plantations. Of course they are now, it's called the inner cities.

Obviously you're not familiar with Rockerfeller Republicanism as was mentioned by another poster up thread.
I cannot imagine MLK being a member of the Democratic Party back in the mid-1950s and 1960s!
That's because your imagination has run wild.
MLK was a rustic, down south, bible belt old school black preacher. There is no way I can see him supporting abortion and same-sex marriages. Nor can I see him supporting welfare and normalizing the breakdown of the traditional nuclear family household.

and today the trash discarded by the Dems 50 years ago makes up the fringe, vocal and small, of the fast declining GOP via the TP.
The best thing that could have happened for America was a backroom deal b/w both parties to effectively disenfranchise this white trash segment of society. They deserve no representation.
I'm sure they have no clue about the connection between MLK and Gandhi! Their ignorance about MLK is disgraceful. They must think the whole world is completely stupid if they think they can pull off a rewrite of history to say MLK was really just a "good Republican" as the Republicans are TODAY.
Republicans today, including Mitt Romney, hate poor people!
