Powell is an idiot? OK! As a lib, I'm happy with that statement. Please keep disrespecting your most admired leaders. They still can give us problems, but we are now quite adept at crippling clowns and yahoos.
Powell's vision is clear, and he is right.
The birthers are nothing but a scampering little monkey in a bright red suit jumping around on a big old elephant. The monkey gets the attention, but only when it's on the elephant's back. If it ever jumps down, it's just a little monkey running around on the ground that nobody wants to get next to. And since monkeys only live for a few years and elephants live for a century, the elephant doesn't give a damn what the monkey does. Powell is a lifelong Republican, and he has seen more than his share of monkeys and yahoos come and go in his party. Like any good General, he knows when to cut through the BS and set his people straight.
Birthers are irrelevant and were irrelevant to the election. What worked was Obama and his machine (including the media) were able to mask over his utter failure on the economy and foreign policy and make the election about class warfare and making the evil rich, whoever that is, pay their fair share, whatever that means.
is unknown. 20 years ago, I used to play tons of doubles tennis against mainly tennis club level players. We had a few in our group who did not belong, poor players, the type who made 3 unforced errors for every good shot executed. Playing one in doubles one day, a guy who wanted to team up with me next asked how my shots were working that day. Having nothing to return due to unforced errors, I honestly said "I don't know yet".
That is the situation of the Obama team. They do not know how their "game" was. The opposing clown made a cartoonish quantity of unforced errors.
Maybe not from you and I respect that but if you think opposition to Obama has nothing to do with race you just aren't paying attention.
You have it backwards. His support had almost everything to do with his race, while is opposition had very little to do with race. He had zero qualifications to be president in the first place and then was reelected for a second term after his first term was a complete failure.
Correct. I'd say it was the tea party which has done more damage, and the tea party is full of birthers, crackpots, culture warriors, etc...
That is true for sure but I think they have an even bigger problem than that. Too many Americans are not going to be fooled anymore by the fear mongering. Add to that I think people are waking up to the fact the GOP does not represent their interests and could really care less about their struggles and problems. The GOP represents the interests of about 1% or less of Americans and people are waking up to the fact.
Powell is an idiot... he also thinks if you oppose Obama that you are a racist. Has nothing to do with race.
... but the fact is that Colin Powell is a very well respected combat veteran and was the leader of millions of American troops who won America's last successful conflict back in 1991.
And all the angry right is left with is a collection of cowardly chickenhawks who avoided military service, but talk like warriors.
Colin Powell looks out for Colin Powell. You don't reach his rank in the military without being political, even if you never run for office.
He was on board with GWB and the Bush doctrine when it made sense for him to be so. When it was no longer popular, he retroactively changed his views.
It was obvious early on that Obama was going to win in '08 against a weak candidate in McCain - that was an easy choice for Powell. With all the built in advantages the encumbant has, it was not an act of political courage to back his guy again in '12.
The best way he can stay relevant and beloved and have a voice in the media right now is to stick his finger in the eye of the GOP. It's really that simple. Heck, Maverick McCain has done that himself for years, he just never completely jumped ship, and was a bit shocked when his media buddies didn't support him for President.
Colin Powell is about making Colin Powell look good, period.
Bush needed Powell much more than Powell needed Bush. Powell had previously served as Reagan's National Security Advisor, Was the youngest Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest position in the Pentagon, and oversaw the invasion of Panama and Operation Desert Storm, the 1st Iraqi war.
he didn't ever have to look good. He was good, and he brought legitimacy to Bush and his merry little band of brigands. Sure, he was political. All leading Generals have to be, as each commands millions of people. But few are so capable that 3 different Presidents select them to serve in the White House. He worked for Reagan and both Bushes. All Republicans, and never for a Democrat.
And when Bush chumped him as Secretary of State with the false report that evidence of mass destruction weapons were found in Iraq, Powell never respected nor trusted Bush again. A four-star General does not accept being made foolish in front of the U.N. General Assembly.
But Powell, ever the good soldier, said nothing. He resigned as Sec. of State shortly afterward. He never agreed with the bush doctrine in any way after he learned he had been lied to, and was never a part of it.
Of course he changed his views afterward. Being thrown into a pig sty does that to a guy.
