Not only will this closure mean hundreds of people will be out of jobs, but it also means our borders will not be safe, especially along the remote U.S. Mexico Border like in Texas. These defense radars detect low flying aircraft infiltrating our borders. Without these defense radars, low flying aircraft will go undetected. It will be open season for any drug/gun/slave smugglers, terrorists flying in with nukes, low altitude missiles, or even a full scale low elevation invasion/attack against America.”
Yet another quote about the closure. Don't know if this is to save money or there is another reason.
There are other systems in place to detect low-flying aircraft; the claim that removing this system will let "low flying aircraft infiltrate our borders" is false. The reason this system is being decommissioned is it's redundant and costs more to maintain. Given the source of the quotes is the company that is losing the government's business, I'd take it with a grain of salt.
It's exactly these kinds of decisions the government should be making to save taxpayers money and reduce the deficit.
The TARS radar system was put in place primarily to fight the war on drugs by detecting drug smuggling aircraft... not for defense against nukes/missiles/military aircraft. As has been pointed out, the radar is redundant, and the vast majority of drugs flowing in from the south come via ground vehicles or boats/semi-submersibles.
What do you think this system provided us safety from? The small percentage of drug smuggling aircraft that cross the border are still just as likely to be picked up by one of the other radar or line of sight systems in place.

Obviously it was there for a reason.
I am not sure where you get your small percentage from, but these cartels have weaponry of small military's.
We can't even pick up some of the submarines they used to smuggle here.
